Windows 7 Sp1 Platform Update
getting the same error when trying to install SP1. Machine is a Toshiba notebook, Windows 7 Pro x64with all patches except windows 7 sp1 wiki SP1, 4GB RAM, otherwise running fine. I have tried the system update readiness tool, which installed and ran successfully. I have tried sfc /scannow I have tried changing the active boot partition from the 100mb http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-update/windows-7-sp1-wont-install-element-not-found-error/531d5f8b-c242-4487-abb7-516a491b4efe hidden partition to the c: partition (I don't use BitLocker, but this resulted in being unable to boot, so I repaired the startup from a W7 boot CD. I have tried running the install from Windows Update, from WSUS, and from the standalone installer. Same result each time. I saw mention by someone in a similar position that a Microsoft technician was able to diagnose the issue from the CBS.log https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windows/en-US/847325db-b3e1-4a95-b450-8c696dbb4f4e/error-installing-windows-7-sp1-element-not-found-0x80070490?forum=w7itproinstall file. In their case it was a broken previous update that had to be manually removed. I'm hoping someone can assist in working out my issue in the same way. I have researched this error extensively and the only other option remaining is a repair installation - but that's not an option here due to the 2 weeks of work to set up the machine with a client's own software running on websphere and Oracle. The developerswon't appreciate being told to repeat the work on a freshly-built machine. (And yes, I know it begs the question "why would it take so long to set up" but that one is out of my control). Any targetted suggestions gratefully received. Also get me the setupapi.dev.log file from the same folder. Sumesh P - Microsoft Online Community Support USB.inf exists - Permissions are SYSTEM = Full control, Administrators = Full control, Users = Read & execute / Read Setupapi.dev.log uploaded to SkyDrive: http://cid-80df164d8198155e.office.live.com/self.aspx/.Public/setupapi.dev.zip I searched this file for "0x00000490" and there is a consistent error to us

I had no idea SP1 was never installed after I'd performed some 94 updates about a month ago. I've been away from Windows since then (either in Ubuntu or out of town), so I was just doing my due diligence and getting any new updates over the month I wasn't at this computer.Anyway, it's always fun windows 7 sp1 when Microsoft's software goes through all the agonizing steps to install, only to fail at the end. You'd think it should alert you to the error clearly listed in the log files before spending an hour+ downloading and rebooting several times during install only to have it fail again, and again... you'd think that especially once you find out the fix is ridiculously simple and takes about 5 minutes in the command prompt. As per the error that pops up, I tried the "Update Readiness Tool". No go on SP1.So I googled, and found some KB articles that suggest a System File Check. Did that. Found a couple fonts that were corrupt, fixed. Still no go on SP1.Basically at this point googling was turning up suggestions to either repair reinstall, or In-Place reinstall. I'm no stranger to, nor squeamish about reinstalling Windows, hell I'd reformat and reinstall if I thought it'd take care of the problem with the least amount of effort (I keep my data separate from my OS, and I keep several backups). But this time is a bit different, because I'm dual booting Ubuntu and Win7, and I'm not sure if even just a repair or in-place reinstall would nuke the bootloader and prevent me from getting back into Ubuntu. But I was about to do it and then I found this page: http://beerpla.net/2011/05/06/how-to-fi ... tallation/And I say hallelujah! Worked like a
