Windows Installer Popup Fix
Posted 22 June 2006 - 12:09 PM As the title says, my boot time is enormous. Everything seems fine until the desktop icons appear and then there is a huge wait time before the items in the right side task bar appear. During that time I am not allowed windows installer cleanup utility to browse through the files nor open any aplication. Whats worrying is that my antivirus loads very late too.The other problem is the EXCEL "preparing to install" error whenever I try to open an excel file. The only way to open them is to go to start>all programs>open new ofice document>spreadsheet .... and then EXCEL window appears. Now I can open a file from hthere. So I am guessing that EXCEL does exist but it doesnt let me open a file directly.Any ideas, I read it can be fixed by the hijack this log. So I am posting it below.I also tried cd %SystemDrive%\dir *.cpl /a h /s > cpl.txtstart notepad cpl.txtWindows XP sp2 ProIBM Thinkpad T43McCafee antivirusZonealarm firewallLogfile of HijackThis v1.99.1Scan saved at 10:07:55 AM, on 6/22/2006Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600)MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP2 (6.00.2900.2180)Running processes:C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\ibmpmsvc.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\Ati2evxx.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exeC:\Program Files\Windows Defender\MsMpEng.exeC:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exeC:\Program Files\Intel\Wireless\Bin\EvtEng.exeC:\Program Files\Intel\Wireless\Bin\S24EvMon.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\Ati2evxx.exeC:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXEC:\Program Files\Synaptics\SynTP\SynTPLpr.exeC:\Program Files\Synaptics\SynTP\SynTPEnh.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\TpShocks.exeC:\PROGRA~1\ThinkPad\PkgMgr\HOTKEY\TPHKMGR.exeC:\PROGRA~1\ThinkPad\UTILIT~1\EzEjMnAp.ExeC:\IBMTOOLS\UTILS\ibmpr

I changed my hard drive last week, and I believe that was when the problem started. Now, every time I run XL or WORD, a "Windows Installer - Preparing to install..." small window pops up. With XL, it takes about 15 seconds, the small install window disappears, and the program runs fine. But the 15 seconds are annoying. With WORD, however, another small window pops up after about 30+ seconds: "Microsoft Office Word 11.0 - An error occurred and this feature is no longer running properly. Please run Setup and select 'Repair...' to restore this application.†A few seconds after I close that window, WORD starts and runs fine. I have searched for a Setup file in the Program Files\Microsoft Office folder, but the only file with that name is SETUP.CHM, which I do not believe is a setup program to be run.
