A read/write error has occurred (-40) by rossero » Sat, 09 Jun 2007 02:41:05 I am having an almost identical problem: Bascially, the database for my Entourage (v. 10.1.4) has become corrupt. This is what I've done so far: Booted from CD and ran Disk First Aid. Then restarted from steam disk write error windows 7 hard drive. On launching Entourage, get the error: "Entourage cannot access your data. To attempt to fix the problem, rebuild your database." Click "OK" and the rebuild database dialog window comes up. Try "Typical Rebuild" "Compacting the database" progress window appears. At record 5600 of 38846 the process stalls, get the error: "Compacting failed. The end of the file was reached." Click "OK" and get the window "Typical Rebuild failed, would you like to try an Advanced Rebuild?" Click "Yes". Progress window appears and the "Preparing the database" cycle runs, and then into "Compacting the database." At some point in that process, get the error: "Rebuilding failed. It is likely that your database cannot be repaired." Click "OK" and am back in Finder. I was thinking of installing the Entourae 10.1.9 update, in case that makes a difference, but I'm wondering if that might further screw things up. Another symptom is that I can't copy the database file itself to test on another machine or anything. Top HELP Entourage Compacting failed. Now,I just recently built my computer (AMD Athlon x4 640 ,GT 630 1gb ddr3, 3 local http://www.yqcomputer.com/148_11308_1.htm disk HDD {74.5 gb,500gb,9 gbs}Windows 7 32 bit, and 8 gbs ram{3 usable}. Anyway, whenever I try to install my games, it stops updating/downloading . This was weird to me,so I clicked play game while it was downloading. That's when the "An error occurred while updating ((X)).(Disk write error)". I put the X their because I tried to download the Nexuiz demo and FTL and it did the same http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3030618 thing as Portal 2. So after countless Google and Steam searches, I probably re installed steam 4-5 times, checked the status of my harddrive that steam is installed on (Windows found nothing wrong),did the MEMcheck, and started Steam as an admin. Im truly stumped. Im worried about this because im playing on buying tons of games during the next sale. Please Help! So, I'm posting it here and this is the first time for me. There were event logs about disk error on my customer's proxy. (please reffer to below) disk write error But when I checked the health on GUI, it's status is OK. (I'm not sure it's going to be right way...) What I want to know is, 1. Is that issue occured because there i

Sometimes the fix is simple, sometimes it's a complete pain. Having recently dealt with this again, I thought I'd post my thoughts in the hopes that it helps someone else out there. So you receive the dreaded "a disk read error occurred. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart". Multiple restarts result in the same error message. If you put your drive into another computer, or connecting it as a slave on your own computer, it will typically work fine, and no data is missing. Because this error is not usually associated with data loss, DO NOT RE-PARTITION THE DRIVE. Your data is likely safe and sound. Here's how we'll recover your data. Try each step below, in order, and see if your drive becomes accessible after each step. In my experience, you won't start seeing results until step 5 or so. 1. Run CHKDSK /R /P from the recovery console (it will typically find no error) 2. run FIXBOOT from recovery console (typically has no result) 3. run FIXMBR from recovery console (typically has no result) 4. Run the manufacturer's diagnostic utility, downloaded from their website (it will typically find no error) 5. Changing the drives from cable select to Master/Slave may fix it. 6. Replacing the data cable may fix it, but usually not. 7. Setting the BIOS to use defaults may fix it, but usually not. 8. Changing the BIOS drive settings from auto to user-specified, ensuring that LBA is selected may fix it. 9. Pulling the CMOS battery to let the BIOS lose it settings may work. At this point, you may be feeling some frustration. :-) If all that fails, here's what will usually work: Ghost your data to a new
