he tried to attach a file in the mail. Technote (troubleshooting) Problem The user gets the error "File cannot be created" when attaching a simple file in the mail. Symptom A user gets the error message below when he attempts to attach a file in the mail. Reinstallation of Notes Client does not solve the problem. Cause This error message can indicate a corruption of the mail file or when there is an application memory leak or application resource conflict. Resolving the problem Below are the steps that have been able to resolve the issue for different users. I. Running maintenance parameters on the mailfile. Running maintenance on the server: 1. Have the user shut down their Notes Client 2. Run these commands on the server console: Load Fixup mail\username.nsf -f -n Load Compact mail\username.nsf -c -d -i Load Updall mail\username.nsf -r 3. Have the user delete their cache.ndk, and then relaunch their notes client and see if issue still occurs. Running maintenance locally: 1. Have the user shut down their Notes Client 2. Run these commands on the Command Prompt on your Notes directory: SAMPLE: C:\Program Files\IBM\Lotus\Notes>nFixup -f -n TEST.nsf nFixup location\mailfile.nsf -f -n nCompact location\mailfile.nsf -c -d -i nUpdall location\mailfile.nsf -r 3. Have the user delete their cache.ndk, and then relaunch their notes client and see if issue still occurs. II. Compacting the workspace. 1. Right-click on an empty spot on the Notes Workspace 2. Choose "Workspace Properties" then click on the second tab 3. Click on the "%used" button. The lower the number, the better. 4. Click on the "compact" button III. Notes Temp Directory Another possible cause of the issue is if the Notes temp directory is being deleted by an antivirus. Please check if the user's notes.ini has the following lines. Delete them and restart Notes Client. NSF_HOOKS= ExtMgr_Addins= When the Notes Client starts, it creates a directory in the temporary folder of machine. This is named 'notesXXXXXX', where 'XXXXXX' is a hexadecimal number unique to each Notes session. This folder should not be deleted by anything other than the Notes client itself, as it contains files necessary for the client to work correctly. The folder contains a file called '~notetp2.reg'. If this is deleted, the Notes Client returns the error "File cannot be created". Please check to see if the user's antivirus is deleting the TEMP directory. IV. notes.ini Another workaround that worked for some users is to add the following in the user's notes.ini: Notes_TempDir=C:\Temp Note: The folder referenced by this paramete
