Powershell window is open as Administrator and I am logged in as administrator. Set-Service -name Superfetch -StartupType Disabled -Status Stopped However I receive the http://serverfault.com/questions/568837/using-powershell-to-disable-services-fails-with-specified-service-does-not-exi following error Service 'Superfetch (SysMain)' cannot be configured due to the following error: The specified service does not exist as an installed service + CategoryInfo : PermissionDenied: (System.ServiceProcess.ServiceController:ServiceController) [Set-Service], ServiceCommandException + FullyQualifiedErrorId : CouldNotSetService,Microsoft.PowerShell.Commands.SetServiceCommand + PSComputerName : xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx Clearly this service is installed, I see it in the installed services snap-in. I see the CategoryInfo as 'PermissionDenied'. How can I disable this service via powershell? I am logged in as an admin! Open up a command prompt and type sc query. You might have to dump it to a text file. This will give you the correct service name you're looking for. It's entirely possible that the service name is called something other than the display name. –Techie Joe Jan 21 '14 at 18:51 yes. If I run 'Get-Service' with that name it returns the service object. not to mention the fact that it keys with its authoritative name (SysMain) leads me to believe the service is correct. –Richthofen Jan 21 '14 at 19:02 See @Bartłomiej Zarzecki's answer below. –Tech

Stupid is avoid asking" I'm pretty new on Windows System Administrator (just 3/4 months) and due to the recently i started working on powershell 2.0. I'm administering a set of windows services, one of them is going to try to execute a "Start-Service" command as part of a powershell script. This windows service is running under a domain account "ATG\Boot" as part of administrators group. But, Start-Service/Stop-Service always fails for this reason: Stop-Service : Service 'SQL Server Reporting Services (MSSQLSERVER) (ReportServer)' cannot be stopped due to the follow ing error: Cannot open ReportServer service on computer '.'. At line:1 char:13 + Stop-Service <<<< Report + CategoryInfo : CloseError: (System.ServiceProcess.ServiceController:ServiceController) [Stop-Service], ServiceCommandException + FullyQualifiedErrorId : CouldNotStopService,Microsoft.PowerShell.Commands.StopServiceCommand This error is reproduced when i execute script from shell, but works properly when i run script with "Run as administrator" option. I would like to empathize that user is part of local administrators group. Any ideas? permissions powershell file-permissions share|improve this question asked Jan 21 '11 at 12:35 NAADEV 3013 add a comment| 2 Answers 2 active oldest votes up vote 2 down vote accepted Is the UAC enabled? If you want to start a service through PowerShell you might get this error: Start-Service YOUR_SERVICE_NAME Start-Service : Service 'x' cannot be started due to the following error: Cannot openx service on computer '.'.At line:1 char:72+ ... here-Object {$_.DisplayName -eq "x"} | Start-Service+ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ + CategoryInfo : OpenError: (System.ServiceProcess.ServiceController:ServiceController) [Start-Service], ServiceCommandException + FullyQualifiedErrorId : CouldNotStartService,Microsoft.PowerShell.Commands.StartServiceCommand We get this error because we are not running the PowerShell with Administrative privileges. Just right click on PowerShell and then click 'Run as administrator'. You will get your cmdlet worked.Similarly you might have to do the same thing for following service commands: New-Service Restart-Service Resume-Service Set-Service Start-Service Stop-Service Suspend-Service Posted by Muhammad Idrees at 12:20 PM Email ThisBlogThis!Share to TwitterShare to FacebookShare to Pinterest Labels: PowerShell 1 comment: Taufique HossainOctober 11, 2016 at 9:46 PMThanks for the solution, mate high point computer servicesReplyDeleteAdd commentLoad more...
