select "The printer I that I want isn't listed". I get the old "XP" Add Printer dialog. I select "Select a printer by name" and enter: \\utility01\ I get the expected list of printers. However, any printer I select generates the message: "Windows cannot connect to the printer" "Operation failed with error 0x00000214" I can connect directly to the printer, but not through the Print Server (UTILITY01). BTW, the print server is running 2003 R2. Anyone have a clue what is going on? TIA... I have to admit, I have never seen this error. Can you share a "printer" that uses a different driver and verify you can connect to the server. I assume this is a real server and not a CNAME for a different machine name. I also assume both machines are 32 bit. Correct any of my invalid assumptions. thanks Alan Morris Windows Printing Team; Search the Microsoft Knowledge Base here: http://support.microsoft.com/search/Default.aspx?adv=1 Tuesday, August 24, 2010 6:23 PM Reply | Quote Answerer 0 Sign in to vote This happens regardless which printer I try to connect to. She now has a laptop running W7 HP and wantted to access the files and printers on the PCs. I changed the workgroup on the laptop to match that of the PCs which were already networked and all is well with the file sharing. BUT when I tried to add the printers in W7 it found them OK but couldn't locate drivers.. I downloaded the drivers but when prompted to install them from the Add Printer wizard I get https://www.experts-exchange.com/questions/25063472/Cannot-connect-network-printers-to-W7-laptop.html two different errors - for the Panasonic I get 0x0000214 'cannot connect to printer' . The laserjet comes with an install application and when I run that I get 0x0000007e 'cannot open Add Printer' Any ideas please? 0 Question by:chrisfixit Facebook Twitter LinkedIn Google LVL 1 Best Solution bychrisfixit OK, here is the solution, with many thanks to TimStitt over at Windows sevenforums.... • Uninstall all previous installation of this printer and reboot both machines • Download the latest copy of Go to Solution 23 Comments LVL 7 Overall: Level 7 Windows 7 1 Printers and Scanners 1 Networking 1 Message Expert Comment by:John15-162010-01-18 Have you checked the Firewall settings in W7? Also, to rule out driver issues (if it is feasible of course) - you could directly connect each printer and add it that way. This way you could be sure it is not just an issue with the drivers and we can focus strictly on the networking part. 0 LVL 1 Overall: Level 1 Message Author Comment by:chrisfixit2010-01-18 Good idea, I'll install the printers directly on the laptop later today and see if that works. 0 LVL 22 Overall: Level 22 Windows 7 17 Printers and Scanners 3 Networking 2 Message Expert Comment by:senad2010-01-18 Install once again on these XP machine and when prompted install additional drivers (for W7) Do not install on laptop as it will not work (only if you print from laptop with prin

The best method for installing is to use the manufacturer's install disk or download from their website and install the package. During the install you will be prompted to install the printer, select network printer and let it search out the printer. With the printers driver only you would let windows do the printer install but I find that the printer specific installer is the best and easiest way. If the mfg does not show the correct driver for your OS, then you can let windows try to find the driver, but this is usually less satisfactory and often lacks some feature or monitoring feature. You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.
