Try a "full reset" of Time Machine, per #A4 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting. If that doesn't help, try repairing your backups, per #A5 there. an OK button. It's really not OK. Why not? Because it didn't tell me where the problem was.As I've said before, I love the simplicity of Time Machine, though presenting an error message like this is not http://www.davidalison.com/2008/05/fixing-simple-time-machine-error.html very helpful. Something - anything - to indicate what went wrong would be a good http://www.ehmac.ca/ehmac-help-desk/103692-time-capsule-time-machine.html idea. I accept that you don't want to scare off the non-techies with a detailed error message but having a little "more" link that described what the problem is would have helped.Rather than investigate I decided to go with the flow. I clicked the OK button and then told Time Machine to back up now. It happily whirred away and looked like everything cannot connect was fine, then at the very end up popped the failure notification again. Crap.I did what I always do when something unexpected happens on my computer: I Google'd up the error message. There were a number of solutions offered up, many involving reformatting the TM drive. I felt that was a little drastic so I looked into the Backup drive in Finder and saw that the last folder was:2008-05-30-064104.inProgressI dragged that folder into the Trash can and was prompted cannot connect to for my login credentials. The file was whisked away and I asked Time Machine to do another backup and it proceeded fine.Finding out what happenedWanting to understand why this occurred I popped around looking for logs. In reviewing the current System Log (/var/log/system.log) I found entries that indicated one of my Growl plugins had a problem being written to the backup. Once that occurred the "in progress" backup file was corrupted and needed to be deleted in order for Time Machine to continue.I'm not sure what caused the problem. The backup and main disks appear to be operating fine; I ran Disk Utility's Verify Disk on both and they came up clean. Perhaps a Growl notification opened the plugin in mid-read? Not too sure but it all seems fine now.If you happen to get the error message above you may want to just check your backup volumes to see if you've got an open backup that's listed as In Progress, even though Time Machine is not running. Try deleting that to see if it allows your backups to continue. At least that's what worked for me! Posted by David Alison on 5/30/2008 Labels: Mac, Rant 102 comments: Fred said... Yesterday I downloaded the new McAfee Security service from Bell Sympatico - which had not been available for Win8 PCs or ever for the Mac - and then found that my Time Capsule cannot be accessed. After uninstalling McAfee, I get two error messages when trying to access TC - in an attempt to connect I get "Operation can't be completed error code -6584," and then when trying to access backups I get "The backup image /Volumes/Data ******'s iMac.sparsebundle is already in use." Can anyone provide advice as to how I can get TC back on line? __________________ Khufu Remove Advertisements Sponsored Links EhMac.ca Advertisement Apr 19th, 2013, 07:23 PM #2 ChilBear Full Citizen Join Date: Mar 2005 Posts: 408 Is the backup on TM really "important" or not? I usually erase my TM backup and then it forces the "full" backup from my iMac. __________________ iMac 24 (1 - White and 1 Aluminum) * Parallels V6 w W7 Mac user since 1985 • iPhone Black 3GS 32GB • iPhone 4 White 16GB • iPad 3G Apr 19th, 2013, 08:32 PM #3 Khufu Khufu Join Date: Feb 2010 Location: Oakville Posts: 15 Time Capsule/Time Machine You're right Chilbear. I've only had the TC since last December, so everything there is still on the iMac. How do I erase and rebackup? I can't access this external drive now. __________________ Khufu Apr 19th, 2013, 08:52 PM #4 ChilBear Full Citizen Join Date: Mar 2005 Posts: 408 Use Disk Utilities and "erase" the TM backup drive when it is connected. __________________ iMac 24 (1 - White and 1 Aluminum) * Parallels V6 w W7 Mac user since 1985 • iPhone Black 3GS 32GB • iPhone 4 White 16GB • iPad 3G Apr 19th, 2013, 11:15 PM #5 Khufu Khufu Join Date: Feb 2010 Location: Oakville Posts: 15 Ok, but that's part of the problem: I can't connect to the drive. That's when I get the error code -6584. I can access the Data on the TC through the Utilities function, but Disk Utilities reveals only the ma
