of suspects. What is your firewall ? Does it allow avast.setup internet access ? - If it does delete the entry for it and do a manual update, this will force the firewall to ask permission again. Do you use a proxy to connect to the internet ?When does this happen, e.g. directly after boot, etc. ? Member Full Member 19 posts Posted 06 January 2011 - 05:34 PM I have a difficult time updating my Avast! anti-virus best free antivirus definitions. When I try to do it manually it keeps mentioning, "Error: can not connect to server." I use Windows XP. I was able to update the Avast anti-virus definitions. The Proxy settings were set at https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=37226.0 Auto detect (use Internet Explorer settings). I changed it to direct connection (no proxy) and it was able to update successfully. Edited by Johnny Almighty, 07 January 2011 - 08:37 PM. Worked beautifully, what a relief. Weeks of applying and testing other suggestions, creating more problems, came to nothing.
