If you have based your code on an example you found somewhere other than here on GitHub, it's very probably outdated - base your code on the examples in the examples cannot connect folder. About 90% of questions on Stack Overflow make this mistake. Loading classes Using composer Composer saves a huge amount of work - handling package dependencies, updates and downloading, and generates a nice autoloader so you don't have to require classes yourself. Loading via composer is the preferred method of using PHPMailer in your project. All you need to do is require the composer autoloader: require './vendor/autoload.php'; It's particularly important if you're using XOAUTH2 authentication cannot connect to since it requires dependent classes that are satisfied by composer. The dependencies are not included by default because they are not needed by everyone and they don't work on the older PHP versions that PHPMailer supports, so you will find them in the 'suggest' section of PHPMailer's composer.json file. You should copy those dependencies to your own composer.json's require section, then composer update to load them and add them to your autoloader. If you don't do this, you're likely to see errors like this: Fatal error: Class 'League\OAuth2\Client\Provider\Google' not found in PHPMailer/get_oauth_token.php on line 24 To fix this either configure composer as described, or download this class and all its dependencies and load them manually yourself. Using PHPMailer's own autoloader Not so long ago, PHPMailer changed the way that it loaded classes so that it was more compatible with composer, many frameworks, and the PHP PSR-0 autoloading standard. Note that because we support PHP back to version 5.0, we cannot support the more recent PSR-4 standard, nor can we use namespaces. Previously, PHPMailer loaded the SMTP class explicitly, and this causes problems if you want to provide your own implementation. You may have seen old scripts doing this: require 'class.phpmailer.php'; If you do only that, SMTP sending will fail with a Class 'SMTP' not found error. You need to either explicitly include the class.smtp.php fil

Mail was running fine under Mavericks but since I upgraded to Yosemite it is having major problems.I have a bunch of IMAP accounts on the servers at Dreamhost. I can connect to these accounts some of the time, but most of the time I have the dreaded exclamation point in a triangle. I cannot send outgoing messages either. Rebooting doesn't help. Reinstalling Yosemite doesn't help. If I switch to an old Mavericks partition it works fine. The Connection Doctor says "Could not connect to this SMTP server" and all the Detail Window shows is "INITIATING CONNECTION Nov 01 17:46:30.270 host:mail.domain.com -- port:143 -- socket:0x0 -- thread:0x6080010689c0".I've seen similar problems reported elsewhere and have tried the cited solutions, including(1) unchecking "Automatically detect and maintain account settings" for both the Account and the outgoing server list(2) checking "Allow insecure authentication"(3) unchecking "Use SSL"(4) editing ~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData/Accounts.plist (with emacs) and setting UserAllowsInsecureAuthentication to true.None of these does any good.If I go to Terminal and type "telnet mail.domain.com 25" I get:Trying IP address...Connected to mail.domain.com.Escape character is '^]'.but no welcome message, and the server does not repond to HELO or EHLO. It times out with "Connection closed by foreign host."It seems pretty clear there is a major problem with Mail in Yosemite.Fortunately, some of the time when I reboot and leave it for a while, it works, but 90% of the time it's down, even with reboots. This is a major drag.-Scott Mac Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10) Posted on Nov 1, 2014 6:04 PM I have this question too Close Q: Mail can't connect to SMTP server for IMAP accounts All replies Helpful answers by musQaria, musQaria Nov 1, 2014 11:04 PM in response to musQaria Level 1 (0 points) Nov 1, 2014 11:04 PM in response to musQaria Here is a follow-up with data from the Console.
