question? Yes No Voted Undo Score 0 Cancel Comments: Jack, what have you tried so far? 03/16/2012 by oldturkey03 Thanks for the suggestions and the link to Richards Notes. Its def a hard failure tho. W/o card, lens and w/full battery it gives err 99. The shutter fires when the battery is inserted, and when the switch is moved every other position, off, on, or arrow. The shutter button itself is non-functional. Lifting the mirror and canon eos20d review inspecting the shutter as suggested in Richards notes did not turn up anything. Gotta be the elect. card inside. I'll just get a new camera and sell this one. For $99! Jack 05/11/2012 by Jack Add a comment 0/1024 Cancel Post comment Are you sure you want to delete this zzzzzz? This error is used for a lot of Canon DSLR errors, so it is hard to pinoint quickly. This could be the battery, memory card or a shutter failure. First, try a new CF card, and then run it without that one. If it doesn't crap out, it was the card. The next thing to try is the battery. Replace the battery and try again. Now, before we consider the camera dead try cleaning the lens contacts, or using a different lens as a last resort to the problem. If cleaning the contacts and replacing the lens does not work, the shutter went bad. Sadly, this isn't an easy fix for most people so you will likely have to go to a shop. It is possible, but you are tearing the whole camera down since Canon didn't intend for this to

I've taken canon eos 1000's of pics over the past 6 weeks with no problems whatsoever. Today however, I received an "ERR 99" message when using my Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM Lens? After a quick scan of the user's guide it seems ERR 99 is a fairly generic "all other" error. I had already taken 20 or so photos with the lens before the error occured. My first canon eos20d error thought was the battery. I had a fully charged spare so I popped it in and tried again. The camera powered up, the auto-focus worked fine, the shutter snapped, then "ERR 99". I tried a new CF-Card. Same thing. Then I switch to my Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM Lens. Worked perfectly. This makes me think it's the Macro Lens itself rather than the camera. I finished shooting with my Wide Angle lens and headed home. A few hours later I switched back to the Macro to do a little more troubleshooting. No error this time??? I'm really confused. I hope a more experienced photographer can tell my why this happend. Do I need to look at returning the Macro Lens? I purchased it from B&H Photo online so I don't think it would be a problem. I made sure to keep my invoice and the original packing materials. What do you guys think?
