even when changing to outgoing port 587 via my Thunderbird program, I kept receiving error message NB connect error 1460.I thought it was thunderbird sending of message failed timed out a Thunderbird issue, it wasn't. Thought it was a Comcast issue. It wasn't.Couldn't figure out what was causing the problem until I found others experiencing the same problem online: https://getsatisfaction.com/mozilla_messaging/topics/outgoing_messages_not_going_anywhere_plain_timeout_or_nb_connect_error_1460Apparently, Avast is still using port to 25 to https://support.mozilla.org/questions/1045715 send emails that it's scanned (?) ... even when we specifically say to use a different port. As a Comcast user and an Avast user the only way I can get my outgoing emails to send is by turning off Avast's outgoing scan function. Avast tech people please check into this issue. I'd like to be able to scan my outgoing emails again. Incoming emails are not an issue.Thank you. But further investigation actually showed that avast is ok but the ISP is blocking port 25, Avast just throws this message to say that it cannot connect to smtp server on that port. to fix it i have fixed this by using alternative SMTP port (8889 for my mail provider ) and all works straight away. see when you try to connect to an SMTP server to send mail. For each error message it identifies possible causes. For troubleshooting techniques, see: Cannot send mail Some http://kb.mozillazine.org/Connection_errors_-_SMTP of these error messages are misleading. In particular, the "Please verify..." part of these messages is rarely helpful. The messages are long, making some of them look very similar. When you are troubleshooting, be careful to identify the error message exactly. Sending mail to the SMTP server happens in stages. Different things can go wrong at each stage, so each stage has different error messages. connect error When a connection fails, Thunderbird provides you with up to four pieces of information about the failure. If you have to ask for support (for example, in a forum or from a helpdesk), ensure that you provide all the information: The status message in Thunderbird's status bar and in the Sending Messages window. This tells you the stage that Thunderbird reached when the error occurred. connect error 1460 An error summary provided by Thunderbird. This is almost always: "Sending of message failed" The detailed error message provided by Thunderbird. This is often misleading. An embedded message from the server. Thunderbird includes this in its error message. Note: If an error message shows the server name as "localhost", it usually means that you are using a webmail extension or an anti-virus program. In this case the error might be coming from that program, not from the SMTP server. [edit] Lookup Thunderbird looks up the SMTP server's name to find its network address (IP address). The lookup service (DNS) is usually provided by your ISP as part of your Internet connection. The status message at this stage is "Looking up..." An error occurred sending mail:
