must be enabled (set to 'manual' or 'automatic') in order to run the Windows Firewall. If "Win. Mgmt. Instrumentation" http://www.lyberty.com/tech/windows/WHAT_IS_.html is not enabled, when it asks you if you want to http://forum.worldstart.com/archive/index.php/t-112476.html enable "Firewall/IIS", it will not start (because of bizarre dependancy trees). See also the services "Windows Management Instrumentation Driver Extentions" and "WMI Performance Adapter".... the function of these is NOT clear, as they do not need to be running in order to enable dcom got the Firewall. wmiprvse? The actual capitalization of the abbreviation is WMIPrvSe, and it's an abbreviation for "Windows Management Instrumentation : Provider Service" (isn't that cute? they went with "se" this time instead of "srv" or "svc"... god forbid they use consistant acronyms...) For some reason, this name is not listed in [services.msc]... See http://www.answersthatwork.com/Tasklist_pages/tasklist_w.htm dcom got error for details of " WMIPrvSe " and " WMIAPSrv "... according to that site, the 'wmiprvse' service is "essential" . the "Server" service ACTUAL Dependencies: Creating a new user account in XP is (for some reason) dependent on the "Server" service... a deadend (again!). It is a little slow in responding (opening files, etc.) and works for a while. But I notice espeically right-clicks or Save Page As often lead to a freeze up, ctrl+alt=del doesn't work, nothing does, so I have to force pc to shut down and then boot all over again. Tried via F8 'Last Known Good Configuration', but doesn't look very promising. There is also a file that I had saved from my Opera 9 sitting tight on desktop, refusing delete, and it has the Internet Explorer icon on it! I got rid of vlc player (which I used to d/ld youtube items. It 'captured' most of my win media player files, I could see mostly its icon on files that had wmpl.icon before. It was working otherwise fine but I got rid of it, lock stock and barrel suspecting that may be that player is the culprit. But that action did not help much either. Following is the pc's error log. Shall be grateful if any of you could suggest a way out. Thank you for your attention.
