always supplies the maximum of 255 global DOS file handles. Could it be that you’re using a Clipper compiled program? If so, add SET CLIPPER=F:100 before starting the program to autoexec.txt and see if that helps. 98 has a msdos error that could cause this, if so how do you rectify the problem. Now My CLIPPER 5.2 applicatrion has 15 DBF files and 32INDEX files. While I run it , there is run time error DBFNTX 1001/ DOS ERROR 4 .However, if I close some open DBFS, then no error. I don't totally remember the syntax, and I think a lot of it depends on what OS you're running this on (so more info would be helpful), but check in the CONFIG.SYS file in the root directory of your boot drive (it's a text file), and find the line that says FILES=20 or some other low number and change it to something higher, like 99 or so. DOS applications had some goofy pre-allocation of file handles or something like that, so you cant just set that number to a large number else it'll chew up too much RAM. Good luck.
