To enable remote connections like the one used by mysqlworkbench you will need to modify your /etc/my.cnf and change bind-address 127.0.0.1 to bind-address 0.0.0.0 or simply comment out the line completely. Once this is done, restart MySQL with the command service mysql restart and you should be able to make your connection. Reply Log In to Comment Have another answer? Share your knowledge. guys, mySQL workbench gives me an Error 10061 everytime I try to connect to my remote mysql server. I https://teamtreehouse.com/community/cant-connect-remotely-to-mysql-server-with-mysql-workbench entered the correct IP, correct password. The user I try to connect as has % as host option. How come it still doesn't work? I saw a http://serverfault.com/questions/518281/mysql-server-refusing-external-connections popup in phpmyadmin stating that the host field is being ignored if a host-table is active. I did find a host table in the mysql database but error 10061 it's empty. What can I do to fix it? Thank you. 2 Answers PRO miguelcastro2 Pro Student 5,416 Points miguelcastro2 miguelcastro2 Pro Student 5,416 Points about 2 years ago MySQL on default only listens to localhost as a security precaution. You might need to make sure MySQL is listening on your external IP interface: mysql error 10061 [mysqld] bind-address = 0.0.0.0 By setting the bind-address to 0.0.0.0 MySQL will now listen on all interfaces. Add this to the my.cnf file. Lars Wettmann 12,438 Points Lars Wettmann Lars Wettmann 12,438 Points about 2 years ago Thanks, Miquel! Worked perfectly on my virtual private server. I can connect fine locally, but I do not seem to be able to connect to my server from an external host. I've made sure it was running on port 3306, and it is. I'm clueless as to why this is happening, and it would be great if someone could help with this. If you have specified "bind-address = 127.0.0.1" in the my.cnf Then your MySQL - server only listens localhost and does not allow remote-connections. It is the default settings in modern MySQL installions. share|improve this answer answered Jun 25 '13 at 7:35 JanneHonkonen 1062 1 Remember, of course, restart your MySQL service after any changes :) –JanneHonkonen Jun 25 '13 at 7:35 It's indeed set to this.
