prevent the Windows Firewall from starting and I will attempt to cover them in this series of five blog posts. In this first post, I will cover Windows XP and Windows Vista / Windows 7 separately as they are two different services. Last I will cover one issue with OneCare. Note: Specifics on Windows Vista and Windows 7will come in a later blog post. Windows XP In Windows XP, the firewall service is named "Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS)", or SharedAccess service. Typical errors seen as either popups or within event logs when the service fails to start are: Cannot start the Windows Firewall/Internet connection sharing (ICS) Service on local computer Error 2: The system cannot find the file specified Error 1705: While starting windows firewall and internet connection sharing services Problems starting the Firewall Service in Windows XP are most commonly related to an issue with the Shared Access registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\SharedAccess The quickest resolution is generally to rebuild the key. card not connecting to my connection at home, but it will on any other connection (Work etc.) I read forum after forum on the net and the question on windows firewall being on kept coming up. https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/networking/2011/06/08/the-windows-firewall-service-fails-to-start-introduction/ So I turned off windows firewall in hopes that might be the culprit and it was no help. Now I want to turn the firewall back on and I am getting the following message when I use the wireless adapter icon and right click to hit windows firewall settings: "Windows firewall settings cannot be displayed because the associated service is not running. Do you want to start the Windows Firewall/Internet connection sharing http://www.howtogeek.com/forum/topic/windows-firewall-is-giving-odd-error-message (ICS) service?" If I click no, nothing happens. If I click yes, I get a simple message that the windows firewall service cannot be started. I tried the Security center, and it said it couldn't be done and referred me to the control panel. Control panel windows firewall says the same thing. Windows firewall cannot be started. Can anybody tell me what's happening with this? The wireless connection still will not connect, even though all of the settings are correct, correct WEP key, SSID etc. When I go to command prompt and type in "ipconfig", it states the media is disconnected. If I type in "Ipconfig /renew" I get the same type of thing. No IP addresses or anything. I did at one point get the Ethernet adapter to try to connect, and it kind of stayed in "aquiring network address" mode and wouldn't do anything else. Sorry, this is so exasperating that I can connect on other wireless networks...but not my own on the DELL computer. Does the firewall error maybe have something to do with this? Windows Firewall/ICS service cannot start Started by Magdalena , Mar 07 2014 04:21 PM Please log in to reply 3 replies to this topic #1 Magdalena Magdalena Members 49 posts OFFLINE Gender:Female Local time:10:07 AM Posted 07 March 2014 - 04:21 PM Been cleaning up an older computer and recently this problem has turned up: Windows Firewall is not on and in an attempt to turn it on it responds with "Windows Firewall settings cannot be displayed because the associated service is not running. Do you want to start the Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) service?" I click "Yes" and it says "Windows cannot start the Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) service." So far I have tried Method 1 and 2 on Microsoft's pagehttp://support.microsoft.com/kb/920074 (Even though this did not start due to a SP2 installation) Reinstalled SP3 (I have not reinstalled SP2 specifically since SP3 usually covered that) <---If thats the issue then shame on me. I have also tried cmd >Netsh winsock reset (Recommendation from another forum) I have tried starting the 'Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS)' in Administrative Tools > Services >Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) which
