This error occurred in five windows servers 2008. Error 2: The system cannot find the file specified ... Windows Event Log service could not start. However, with the help of procmon, it turned out that the issue was caused by an incorrect registry entry at: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\eventlog\Parameters\ServiceDll Event Log service by default will look at: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\eventlog\ServiceDll for the service dll to start the service, however, when "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\eventlog\Parameters" presents, it will look for ServiceDll underneath the "Parameters" sub key. And in my case, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\eventlog\Parameters\ServiceDll was referring to an empty string, so Event log service cannot find the service dll file to start the service. So, I just deleted the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\eventlog\Parameters, and after that, Event log service starts correctly. Hope this helps. Proposed as answer by thomasvdb F

It could be a character limit was hidden within that service driver module. I could not find any windows related docs to confirm if there is a system bound character limit to a path or service name that I had exceeded. I will dig in to the service driver when time permits and see if that turns out to be the problem. Which Rule is used for your XML files when you load them in BC2? If you go to the Tools menu -> Options dialog, Rules section, and edit that Rule, is there a path in the External Conversion section? If so, this is the expected path of the helper files. Please double check your install directory (Program Files\Beyond Compare 2\) to see if these files are present. If you are still having trouble, would you be able to email us a copy of your BCSupport.zip from the Help menu -> Support; Export, and a pair of sample files that demonstrate the error?
