sense in searching for the root of the problem I discovered the IIS Admin Service hadn’t started after booting up my machine. Trying to manually start up http://jan-v.nl/post/iis-admin-service-doesnt-start-anymore the service didn’t help much either, I was confronted with a message telling me “The system cannot find the file specified.”. Sadly, the event logs didn’t help much, as the logs https://www.experts-exchange.com/questions/26674905/IIS-Admin-Service-won't-start-on-SBS2008.html told me about the same “The IIS Admin service terminated with the following error. The system cannot find the file specified”.Having not much to go from here I had to error 2 start searching the web to check if other people had stumbled across this issue also. Lucky for me, someone had indeed solved this problem, back in 2008 and blogged about it. Muqeet had discovered this error usually occurs when the metabase.xml file is missing or corrupt.Checking out the default location of the metabase.xml file (C:\WINDOWS\system32\inetsrv\) confirmed this. Somehow the file was gone error 2 the from the file system. Lucky for me IIS is backing up the file when a change is made within the IIS configuration. The backups can be found in the History folder (C:\WINDOWS\system32\inetsrv\History\).Restoring the most recent backup to the original location had fixed the problem. The IIS Admin Service was able to start again, which means all the websites in IIS had started also. Please enable JavaScript to view the comments powered by Disqus.comments powered by DisqusAbout meMy name is Jan de Vries.I'm working at 4DotNet, a Microsoft oriented consulting company in the Netherlands. Most of the stuff I write over here will have some relation to the Microsoft products I'm using.Contact me:LinkedInTwitterVinitCategoriesWindows (8)PowerShell (5)NPM (1)VMWare (3)Windows 10 (1)networking (4)Azure (12)ALM (2)deployment (2)Octopus (2)ASP.NET (11)Visual Studio (8)Analytics (2)Azure (3)ASP.NET (2)Visual Studio (3)SQL (30)Office365 (1)Software (2)Git (1)MongoDB (1)Windows Phone (5)Virtual machine (1)MiniBlog (1)Orchard (7)SharePoint (28)Software (4)Chocolatey (1)Web API (2)XML (1)Websites (1)Windows 8 (1)Hardware (1)ebook (1)OData (1)OWIN (1)IIS (3)Windows Server (6)Web (1)performance (1)MVC (1)OSX (1)VM (1)virtual (1)NuGet (1)ForeFront (1)Windows Server (1)certificate (1)IIS (1)TFS (1)SharePoint (1)DVCS (3)Mercurial (3)MVVM (2)software (1)Entity Framework (3)Clean Code (1)InfoPath (1)LINQ (5)Vinit (1)LINQ (5)AJAX (1)ReSharper (1)

Solved IIS Admin Service won't start on SBS2008 Posted on 2010-12-12 SBS Microsoft IIS Web Server 2 Verified Solutions 14 Comments 2,929 Views Last Modified: 2012-06-21 I have a client server that will not start IIS Admin Service. The system is SBS2008 and has been in production for 3 months. All services worked fine on Friday, then on Saturday I got a report of no email. After checking into the issue, it appears that IIS Admin Services will not start. The error I get when I try to start the services is, "Windows could not start the IIS Admin Service service on Local Computer. Error 2: The system could not find the file specified." The log entry in Event Viewer is: Event ID 7023 The IIS Admin Service service terminated with the following error: The system cannot find the file specified. From what I see in the properties, IIS Admin Service is looking for file iisreset.ext in the Windows folder, it is there. No updates were done on the server. Check SBS BPA shows that IIS isn't running, that Exchange 2007 SP3 hasn't been applied. No other big items are noted. This server has been restarted a few times. I have looked at some of the notes in this forum. There is reference to this issue in another article that points to an article for IIS 4.0 and 5.0. SBS 2008 runs 7.0 So I need some assistance to get SBS web services (OWA, RWW) back in action, which I believe with get the Exchange
