A new one I had recently written was very similar to the others and while it installed without error - on starting http://stackoverflow.com/questions/19799669/new-windows-service-installed-fails-to-start-system-error-2-system-cannot it with the service controller it failed to start with the error dialog: System error 2 ... system cannot find the file specified. After time and consternation, the only thing I could think of that was significantly different about this service was that the path and executable name were at least 10 characters longer than any of my other services. On shortening both the path and .exe name and re-installing, the service ran fine: no error! I can only assume my previous path or service or .exe name was too long. Also, It would be pertinent to mention I had used some borrowed "service driver" code built in to my exe to handle the install/uninstall of the service to the service controller via win API calls. It could be a character limit was hidden within that service driver module. I could not find any windows related docs to confirm if there is a system bound character limit to a path or service name that I had exceeded. Error 2: The system cannot find the file specified Posted on April 15, 2013 by Thomas Strubinger in Computer Repair When attempting to print or access printers all of them were missing. Trying to start print spooler from services.msc and get the following error "Could not start the Print Spooler service on Local Computer. Error 2: The system cannot find the file specified." The Fix for: Could not start the Print Spooler service on Local Computer. Error 2: The system cannot find the file specified on a similar version of windows go to C:\WINDOWS\system32\ and copy SPOOLSV.exe on to a flash drive (You can also retrieve this file from the original CD) on the computer that has the issue paste this file in to the same place. Restart computer or start print spooler from services.msc The reason this happens usually this happens because some malware infested the file and then the anti-virus deletes due to infection. While this is a critical file for printing it will not affect the ability for your computer to boot. This could also be caused by someone intentionally deleting the file, regardless the error states the file no longer exisit in the place the OS is looking for it. replacing the file will correct the issue. If you found this helpful, please leave a comment below. this has just worked for me, if you have this problem, give this a try: on the windows cd, copy SPOOLSV.EXE to C:\WINDOWS\system32. make sure the extension is exe (you might have to left click the file and add the last e), double click it. right click my computer, click manage, on the left click services and applications, click services. on the right side, look for print spooler, double left click on it, select start, close the system services window. this should fix that problem.
