This is the first time I’m using the program, so I’m having a few problems setting it up. I can't connect to a server because presumably i don't have one. I typed in my machine name to create a default/localhost server using windows authentication but i received an error. Error: TITLE: Connect to Server A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was http://stackoverflow.com/questions/11629475/microsoft-sql-server-2008-management-studio-connect-server-instance-issue not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 2) Could someone guide me on how i can setup up a local host to connect and thus be able to create my database. Also I’d like to know afterwards how i can create a server (ftp) to connect into and create my database there allowing me to view this on my laptop or a different machine. Btw i have looked on Google for this, but I’m getting a bit confused, because I’m unsure what I’m searching for. If anyone can shed some light on my problem i would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. sql-server-2008 share|improve this question asked Jul 24 '12 at 11:02 KHAN 1613715 stackoverflow.com/questions/360141/… –ajay swamy Jul 24 '12 at 11:07 2 Check "Named Pipes" is enabled for this instance (from SQL Server Configuration Manager). –Bridge Jul 24 '12 at 12:54 2 MachineName\SQLEXPRESS worked for me thnx. –KHAN Jul 24 '12 at 15:55 add a comment| 9 Answers 9 active oldest votes up vote 21 down vote accepted Does Your server name looks like : "localhost ( or IP of Your server )"\"server name", E.G : localhost\SQLEXPRESS Open application on Start -> -> Config

I know a good level of MySQL but now I'm wanting to extend my knowledge to SQL and I want to practice writing out queries on the SQL Server Management Studio. I have downloaded and installed the free SQL Server 2008 free on the microsoft website, and then I have done the same for the Server Management Studio 2008. However, to start practising I need to create my database, and to do that, I need to connect to a server. This is where I'm confused, I tried writing out the server name as 'sqlserver'.. something random like that, then I receive this error as shown below: TITLE: Connect to Server Cannot connect to sqlserver. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 2) For help, click: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink?ProdName=Microsoft+SQL+Server&EvtSrc=MSSQLServer&EvtID=2&LinkId=20476 BUTTONS: OK I've spent hours now looking up what I have been doing wrong, I've tried reinstalling the software, running the Management Studio as an administrator and I've also created rules in my Windows Firewall so that it allows the ports for 1433 and 1434. I still keep on getting the same error message. I'm not sure if I'm doing anything completely stupid in this scenario, all that I know is that I'm desperate to getting this working so I can just start practising and learning the language. Any help? Thanks, Dale! sql share|improve this question asked Oct 1 '14 at 18:25 user2334014 312 add a comment| 2 Answers 2 active oldest votes up vote 0 down vote accepted If you installed SQL Server and SSMS on your machine directly, check Windows Services to verify
