The Windows Event Log service could not be started. A system error has occurred. System error 2 has occurred. The system cannot find the file specified. I tried the following advice I from here: restarted the OS (virtual on the host's VMWare). re-checked the settings in services menu -they are like in the link. checked the identity in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\eventlog - the identity is NT AUTHORITY\LocalService gave all Authenticated Users full access to C:\Windows\System32\winevt\Logs ran fc /scannow - Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations. went to the file %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log - all clean, [SR] Repairing 0 components EDIT: Uninstalled the recent system updates and rebooted - didn't help EDIT: Sysinternals Process Monitor results when running start service from services panel (procmon in elevated mode): filters: process name is svchost.exe : include operation contains TCP : exclude the events captured are: 21:50:33.8105780 svchost.exe 772 Thread Create SUCCESS

Thursday, January 21, 2010 11:20 AM Reply | Quote 25 Sign in to vote I met the exact problem yesterday, and tried the 3 options as you mentioned, but the problem remained. However, with the help of procmon, it turned out that the issue was caused by an incorrect registry entry at: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\eventlog\Parameters\ServiceDll Event Log service by default will look at: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\eventlog\ServiceDll for the service dll to start the service, however, when "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\eventlog\Parameters" presents, it will look for ServiceDll underneath the "Parameters" sub key. And in my case, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\eventlog\Parameters\ServiceDll was referring to an empty string, so Event log service cannot find the service dll file to start the service. So, I just deleted the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\eventlog\Parameters, and after that, Event log service starts correctly. Hope this helps. Proposed as answer by thomasvd

A new one I had recently written was very similar to the others and while it installed without error - on starting it with the service controller it failed to start with the error dialog: System error 2 ... system cannot find the file specified. After time and consternation, the only thing I could think of that was significantly different about this service was that system error 2 the path and executable name were at least 10 characters longer than any of my other services. On shortening both the path and .exe name and re-installing, the service ran fine: no error! I can only assume my previous path or service or .exe name was too long. Also, It would be pertinent to mention I had used some borrowed "service driver" code built in to my exe to handle the install/uninstall of the service to the service controller via win API calls. It could be a character limit was hidden within that service driver module. I could not find any windows related docs to confirm if there is a system bound character limit to a path or service name that I had exceeded. I will dig in to the service driver when time permits and see if that turns out to be the problem. Meanwhile I welcome any insights. windows windows-services servicecontroller share|improve this question asked Nov 5 '13 at 21:46 Ho Ho Ho 206129 What was the total length of path before you shortened it. Also did your path have any unusual characters? If you could also provide the initial path used that would also assist anyone trying to answer your query –Chelseawillrecover Nov 6 '13 at 6:03 The working service now has an executable name leng

Windows 7: Cannot start Windows Time service 29 Oct 2012 #1 Rincewindwiz 32 bit Ultimate 107 posts Cannot start Windows Time service Hi I noticed my PC failed to update to daylight saving time. So I tried to synchronise the clock (CP->Date & Time->Internet Time but I got the message "Windows Time Service is not running." Into services and sure enough it is there but not started. Actions->Start produces a window that says "Windows could not start the Windows Time Service on Local Computer. Error 2: The system cannot find the file specified". (No idea which file!!!) Action->Properties tells me that the path to the executable is c:\windows\system32\svchost.exe -k LocalService and that file (svchost.exe) is certainly there. Startup type is automatic Start parameters are blank. w32tim /unregister works fine w32time /register produces (after a bit of a pause) "The following error occurred: The system cannot find the path specified. (0x80070003)" I wonder which path? Maybe that's the reason it cant find this unknown file? net start w32time produces The Windows Time service is starting. The Windows Time service could not be started. A system error has occurred. System error 2 has occurred. The system cannot find the file specified. So what file is it looking for? Why is it looking for it? Where is all this specified? Thanks for any ideas!
