The funny thing about the AESDirect http://aesdirect.census.gov/support/reactivate_account_howto.html system, however, is that it will reject your shipment if you are missing the license number or exemption code, but when you review the line item to see what is wrong, it will fill in the proper code for you. All you need to do is save the item, and the error goes away. You can avoid all that funny business by entering a license number or exemption code http://www.shippingsolutions.com/blog/export-license-number-or-exemption-code-required-for-all-aesdirect-filings before clicking the Submit Filing button. If the item does not require a license number, AES specifies the exact exemption code to use for each license type. For example, for license type C33—No License Required, you must submit an exemption code of NLR. In Shipping Solutions export documentation and compliance software, enter the license number or exemption code on the EZ Start-Product Detailscreen in the box labeled License No./Exemption. You can also store the appropriate number or code in the Products Database, so you won't have to enter it each time you ship that item. Below is a chart showing whether a license is required for a particular license type, and if not, what the proper code is for submitting to AESDirect. If you have any questions or would like a pdf version of the chart, send an email to info@shipsolutions.com. Please enable JavaScript to view the comments powered by Disqus. For example, one of our Shipping Solutions users got the error message shown error codes below. It doesn't matter that you can't read the details. The point is, it's a scary looking error message that beginsHTTP Status 500-Request processing failed. This must be a big deal! After a little research, however, it was determined that the user had a Schedule B number entered for her line items but no Unit of Measure. This tiny oversight resulted in the scary Status aes direct error 500 error. (It actually wasn't an oversight, but more on that later.) If you have entered a valid Schedule B number, meaning it exists, not that it is necessarily the correct one for your item, you must also have a Unit of Measure selected, or you will get the Status 500 error message when you upload your information from Shipping Solutions to AESDirect. It doesn't even have to be the correct Unit of Measure. You just have to have one selected when you upload to AESDirect. If you have provided the wrong Unit of Measure, AESDirect will give you an error message but actually fill in the correct Unit of Measure for you. All you will need to do is edit the item and click Save. Of course you can avoid the error by providing the correct Unit of Measure.See my Unit of Measure blog post for how to determine the correct Unit of Measure for your Schedule B code. If you have an invalid Schedule B number, meaning it doesn't exist in the Census Bureau's list of Schedule B numbers, then AESDirect will not accept the number,
