answered Posted by smckenzie2015 on 29 Jun 2015 8:13 Does anyone know what the flashing amber 3&4 diagnostic lights on the font of the Optiplex 960 dell optiplex 980 diagnostic lights mean exactly? Here is what I have done so far: -Removed and re-seated each individual RAM module -Removed and re-seated hard drive I have also removed tried to boot to the bios with the RAM and HArd drive removed but still get the http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/04/product-support/product/optiplex-960/manuals flashing amber 3&4. This computer is way out of warranty so I am just trying to figure out if it needs to be replaced or not. Thanks for you help! All Replies Posted by DELL-Colin H on 29 Jun 2015 9:17 Hi smckenzie2015, The 3,4 diagnostic lights are advising you that there's an issue with the RAM. If you've removed the RAM and they http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/desktop/f/3514/t/19638944 are still showing 3,4 then it seems there's something else causing this. Can you try the steps below to narrow it down to what's at fault: 1. If you can remove all components - DVD drive, any graphics cards/PCI cards - and then power on and see if the issue changes. If no change, 2. Disconnect the I/O panel - this will stop the power button being used and the LEDS will be off. Plug in the power cable and it should power on automatically and Memory beeps may be heard. 3. If the beeps are heard it indicates the front panel is at fault, If no beeps........ 4.Are you able to clear the CMOS in the system? It involves having the power cable removed and removing the Coin Cell Battery, for a few secs then re-inserting and powering on. If you don't know how to do that then please follow thislink. If still no beeps........ 5. Then the issue may lie with the PSU. Plug in the power cable, and press the black button above the power cable, if the Green LED comes on next to the button and the PSU fan spins then the PSU is fine. If there's no Green LED or fan spin, the PSU may be at fault 6. If after all that the system is still not posting then it could be the CPU or the Motherboard at fault Colin HDell | Social Outreach Services I'm based in the UK and available Monday to Friday 9am-5pm GMT Get Suppo

"optiplex 960 error codes 3 & 4 at startup"Found out by myself the google suggestion to look up the Dell Diagnostics page:http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/Op745/en/UG_en/trouble.htmLights 3 & 4 means "Memory modules are detected, but a memory failure has occurred." Bingo! I didn't actually replace memory sticks, but pulled them out and put back in one by one. Only three out of four sticks were accepted. Works. If its spinning then you could try reseating the memory modules inside the system tower . Opem the tower and then disconnect the green colour ruler shapped modules which has a latch on either sides. then try turning in the system ... check if turns on properly. Hope its informative.
