Are you using Win32 or some other API from which the GetLastError function comes? –Joris Timmermans Jun 9 '10 at 13:39 Should this be tagged as 'winapi'? –B Johnson Jun 9 '10 at 13:40 add a comment| 1 Answer 1 active oldest votes up vote 46 down vote +250 I guess you want something like this: DWORD dwLastError = ::GetLastError(); TCHAR lpBuffer[256] = _T("?"); if(dwLastError != 0) // Don't want to see a "operation done successfully" error ;-) ::FormatMessage(FORMAT_MESSAGE_FROM_SYSTEM, // It´s a system error NULL, // No string to be formatted needed dwLastError, // Hey Windows: Please explain this error! MAKELANGID(LANG_NEUTRAL,SUBLANG_DEFAULT), // Do it in the standard language lpBuffer, // Put the message here STR_ELEMS(lpBuffer)-1, // Number of bytes to store the message NULL); Also see: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms679351(VS.85).aspx share|improve this answer edited Jun 9 '10 at 14:47 answered Jun 9 '10 at 13:43 humbagumba 1,8561015 Thank's for helping me –Tim Jun 9 '10 at 14:00 1 Mind setting this to
over the past few weeks, and occasionally I’ve needed to set up some debug points to print errors that occur during file and memory I/O. When something goes wrong inside the Win32 API, some methods will return a system error code directly (such as all of the registry methods) and others will simple return a NULL pointer or a 0-length DWORD and require you to poll the GetLastError method yourself. Unfortunately, these error codes are just long integers (DWORDs) and don’t contain any of that human-friendly information that I’m used to for .NET exceptions. I created a Gist on Github that shows how we do it and have also included the code below: Discussion, links, and tweets I'm the CTO and co-founder of Petabridge, where I'm making distributed programming for .NET developers easy by working on Akka.NET and Helios.
