It is the indication of how many shots are available in the buffer. When you shoot there is always an "r" number there, normally higher, but error r02 nikon you just don't notice it when the camera is responding quickly. The problem that you are having is most likely memory card related. The camera operation will slow down or even lock up if it is unable to write the photo data to the card quickly enough to maintain sufficient space in the buffer (the camera's internal memory). If your card is close to full or files have written and deleted many times then the card may need to be formatted or replaced.
