I got a message on the black screen saying my "system has been tampered with .... turn off and then turn on your computer". After a few attempts, I was able to start it after hitting F8. I had difficulty starting my pc again the next time but

In any case, when you are getting messages like that, it is best not to depend on the backup supplied with XP (it is on the Home disk, but you may have to load it manually).
