It does not necessarily mean that the camera is bad though. This error shows up fairly frequently on new Nikon DSLR cameras that have oily contacts from the manufacturing process, which you can easily take care of yourself. In reply to Jwats • Feb 22, 2009 This happened to me after being out in single Fahrenheit degree weather for over three hours. I use a Sandisk Extreme III. Even after reinserting, the msg https://photographylife.com/nikon-dslr-error-messages would reappear after a few shots. Only really left after I warmed up the camera.Other than the weather, I never had this error.-- hide signature -- RomeoDhttp://www.flickr.com/rcdizon RomeoD's gear list:RomeoD's gear list Nikon D7100 Nikon AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.8D Sigma 17-50mm F2.8 EX DC OS HSM Nikon AF-S DX Micro Nikkor 40mm F2.8 Nikon AF-S DX Nikkor 18-300mm F3.5-5.6G ED VR +3 more Reply Reply with quote Complain https://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/2535056 SteMa • Senior Member • Posts: 1,100 Re: my first CHR error message--D90 In reply to Jwats • Feb 22, 2009 I got this error today, but figured it could be the battery (I read it as CHA, I tought it means change accumulator...) I was using a 4 mb SanDisk Extreme sdhc card, a Nikon battery Pack, and lens at the time. I was shooting at a pretty fast clip when the CHG error message occurred. Based on the information I gotten from other posts regarding this problem I turned the camera switch to the off position to remove the card so as not to lose any of the shots I had taken. To my horror the camera would not turn

abrasive action (mounting/unmounting) on the lens-camera contacts may be another way to combat FLBW, according to some user experiences. It appears fair to assume that new lenses (be that Nikkor or third party) may not come off of the line with impeccably clean contacts, which is just another indication that cleaning contacts is probably the first important step to narrow down on possible causes. It's been almost a year since I wrote the original article (here) on the notorious EN-EL3e False Low Battery Warning (FLBW), and I am still unaware of any official responses from Nikon on this issue, nor of any suggestions on how to solve it - even if only temporarily. If you are aware of any official Nikon response, I would appreciate it if you could point me to it. Possible Solutions After an extensive review of suggested solutions, by users here and on other forums, here are some ideas that might work for you:1 – Using genuine Nikon batteries and not third party rip-offs helps, but is no guarantee that you will not fall victim to FLBW, either now or at some point in the future. Many users report this problem after having had their cameras for several months. The D200 and D700 appear to be the least affected; the large majority of users have a D300(S), D90 or D80.2 – Update firmware if you have not done so already. Users report solving the problem after updating to the latest firmware, especially in the case of the D300.
3 – Even though some users tell me: “don't tell me to clean the contacts”, CLEAN the contacts on your lens(es), body and battery. It is the first step in narrowing down on possible causes.4 – Although Li-Ion batteries like the EN-EL3e supposedly do not suffer from “memory-effect”, fully discharging them is still recommended. There are more than a few users who are reporting this problem after repeatedly and/or cumulatively charging the battery without ever fully discharging it.For the moment, fully discharging and then charging is Nikon's only formal recommendation for solving FLBW. The fact that many users report problems after owning the camera for some time, appears to be another indication that cumulative charging may be part of the problem. The easiest way to fully discharge is connecting the camera with a low battery to the computer and waiting until if turns off
