That code is not in the manual but there is a little paragraph that I'll quote: "In rare instances, unusual characters may appear in the control panel and the camera may stop functioning. In most cases, this phenomenon is caused by a strong external static charge. Turn the camera off, remove and replace the battery, and turn the camera on again. It wouldn't focus and the top panel was flashing 'r21'. (I can manually change the aperture opening on the lens). Does anyone know what this means? Is it a camera error (such as no SD card inserted) or a lens compatibility error? I will have to return the lens if it is https://www.talkphotography.co.uk/threads/nikon-d90-older-lens-r21-message.171274/ fault so if anyone has any advice it would be much appreciated. Thank you. The error that shows up with an incompatible lens (normally when the aperture ring isn't locked at it's smallest setting) is fEE Flash In The Pan, Oct 10, 2009 Share #2 JDholic Messages: 3,420 Name: Jonny Edit My Images: Yes I was about to suggest about the aperture ring being locked or not, was there a memory card in the d90 you used?? JDholic, Oct 10, 2009 Share #3 Jaz Messages: 97 Edit My Images: No Thank you both for the help. : ) Oh yeah r = remaining. I didn't ask if there was an SD card in the camera, though if it was showing r21 then there probably was? If I remember rightly I think the aperture ring on the lens was latched on at f32, possibly during the mounting of the lens. Would this be the cause? Does it need to be set to f4? Th

I had the same problem with the Nikon d90 F-- error message which drove me nuts! I called Nikon, they walked me through a lengthy reset procedure which didn't work. After spending a few hours researching online, I found the answer. It is not the memory card or nor a defective camera body. The lens does not need to be rechipped. The F-- error means the camera is unable to communicate with the lens and is caused by a poor connection between the ground contact pin on the lens and the metal mounting ring on the camera. Most people buy the camera, install the lens once and then encounter the error. This one time lens installaiton does not give the contact point a chance to seat itself properly. You will find that if you hold down the lens release button and twist the lens as if to remove and reinstall the lens about 10 times that the problem will disappear. You don't even have to actually pull the lens away from the body, just press the release button and twist on and off and allow the friction to provide a better electrical contact. Too bad Nikon doesn't tell their customers about this s
