Download and install TinkerTool (find it via Google).2. Run TinkerTool and check the box for "Show hidden and system files" (it's the very first option).3. Click "Relaunch Finder" at the bottom of the TinkerTool menu.4. Open a Finder window showing your boot drive.5. Navigate to the previously invisible folder ".Spotlight-V100/Store-V1/" and trash the file inside it called "Exclusions.plist".6. Restart the Finder.7. Open TinkerTool and uncheck the "Show hidden and system files" box to set things back to normal. It sounds like you might have some other problem
was trying to index my Hard Disks, the Spotlight Privacy pane in System Preferences was empty of exclusions, and I got the following error trying to exclude my HDs tempoararily to try and force an index rebuild: "Privacy List list wii error codes Error The item couldn't be added or removed because of an unknown error." Looking in Console list windows error codes I could see after trying to access Spotlight: "16/09/11 1:53:25 PM com.apple.launchd[1] (com.apple.metadata.mds[2592]) Job appears to have crashed: Segmentation fault" Using "sudo mdutil list sql error codes -E /path_to_volume" in Terminal to try and force a rebuild failed with an error telling me the Spotlight process was no longer running. So - where to from there? Well, it occured to me if I restarted my Mac and https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1462997?start=0&tstart=0 acted before Spotlight crashed and weirdly did not auto-restart it's process, I could turn off indexing, delete the partial index (which was obviously corrupted and causing the troubles), and re-enable indexing to get a clean indexing begun. So I restarted my Mac, and then used "sudo mdutil -i off /path_to_volume"(1) in Terminal for all of my HDs. Next I erased the partial index on each HD using "sudo mdutil -E /path_to_volume". Finally I re-enabled indexing on only those HDs http://www.motherboardpoint.com/threads/spotlight-corrupt-partial-index-fix.252763/ I wanted indexed (so not backup HDs for example) using "sudo mdutil -i on /path_to_volume". After which a completely new index began to be created by Spotlight. As usual this took the better part of a day, and for some reason fontd loves to run at 100% CPU (though thankfully for only one core!) for some of the time. Still, the next day all was well with indexing completed, Spotlight fully functional again, and no processes hogging CPU. Anyway - I hope this helps someone having similar troubles. The key was to use Terminal to sort out Spotlight before it had a chance to crash. So don't otherwise trying to interact with Spotlight before trying the above, if you're getting the privacy pane weirdness and being told spotlight is no longer running in Terminal when trying to control it. Regards, Jamie Kahn Genet (1) where "/path_to_volume" is the path of the volume (HD or partition of HD) being indexed. You can also drag and drop your HD icons from the Finder into Terminal to get their proper path, if you're unsure how to express it. -- If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the precipitate. on June 23, 2010 by SK Several users have reported an issue in which Spotlight refuses to work or causes a systemwide crash after the update to Mac OS X 10.6.4.Fixes Remove corrupt dictionaries. In some cases, this issue can be solved by moving (to a safe location) all items out of /Library/Dictionaries-or moving in fresh dictionary files from a backup or alternate system-then restarting. If this solves the problem, download theMac OS X 10.6.4 combo updater, which weighs in at a hefty 887MB. Quit all open applications and run the installer. Spotlight re-index. It appears that at least some instances of this issue can be attributed to problematic Spotlight indexing. Re-index your startup drive and any external USB drives by following these instructions:Open System Preferences (in the Apple menu; upper-left portion of the screen)Open the Spotlight pane, then select the Privacy tab.Drag your hard drive(s) and any USB drives, USB memory sticks, etc. from the desktop to the Privacy list.Remove the items from your privacy listIf the above process doesn’t work to resolve your mouse/keyboard freezing issue, try downloadingHidden Files to view invisible files on your mounted drives. Delete the file.Spotlight-V100 from your startup drive and any connected USB drive then restart.Related Posts:Spotlight Search - How to set Privacy and other TipsMac OS X: How to free up hard disk spaceMac OS X: What is "other" storage and how to…Mac OSX: Your startup disk is full or almost full, how to… Filed Under: Mac Tagged With: Mac, performanceComments madhukarah saysJuly 27, 2010 at 4:27 AM thanks…problem solved by removing Dictionary from /LibraryReply gnite21 saysOctober 31, 2010 at 6:55 PM I tried adding, then removing my hard drive to the spotlight privacy pane, and it would not let me add it… giving an error message that said ‘Privacy List Error.
