The target name used was cifs/dc01.local. This indicates that the target server failed to decrypt the ticket provided by the client. This can occur when the target server principal name (SPN) is registered on an account other than the account the target service is using. Please ensure that the target SPN is registered on, and only registered on, the account used by the server. This error can also happen when the target ervice is using a different password for the target service account than what the Kerberos Key Distribution Center (KDC) has for the target service account. Please ensure that the service on the server and the KDC are both updated to use the current password. If the server name is not fully qualified, and the target domain (domain.local) is different from the client domain (domain.local), check if there are identically named server

Event Type:ErrorEvent Source:KerberosEvent Category:NoneEvent ID:4Computer:SE-SMURF01Description:The kerberos client received a KRB_AP_ERR_MODIFIED error from the server PC-BLA09$. Commonly, this is due to identically named machine accounts in the target realm (FOO.BAR.STRIPE.LOCAL), and the client realm. Please contact your system administrator. I had replaced those machines a week ago, and everything seemed to work fine. So I didn't understand why these errors were suddenly popping up. The applications running on those computers where throwing a wobbler as well. Some googling later I found 2 remarks that were useful. error from the The first one was that someone fixed it by taking the computer out of the domain, renaming it, changing the SID, and changing the IP address. While this is overkill on the scale of killing a mouse with a thermonuclear weapon, it pointed in the direction of a network level problem. The second remark was by a Microsoft employee who explained that DNS misconfiguration can be the source of problems like this. If kerberos thinks it is communicating with pcA it encrypts the kerb ticket with the password of pcA. but if the ticket then ends up on pcB because of the DNS mismatch, the above events will be logged. At that moment I realized that I had changed the IP address of an adapter on PC-BLA10 because it conflicted with PC-BLA09. The reason everything worked fine initially was because that port had been left disconnected until 2 days ago when I configured the correct IP address. The conflict was resolved and the DNS information was updated, but that didn't mean that the DNS caches were up to date. So I cleared the DNS cache of the DNS server, and used ipconfig /flushdns to clear the resolver cache on the domain controller and PC-BLA10, and the problem disappeared. Write the text yourself, as a copy-paste can give problems (I suspect the Unicode-formatting to be different on some webpages). Update: After this blog-entry I had an article published that gives an overview of Kerberos in a Sharepoint environment Update 23/12-2008: On Windows Server 2008 the IIS7 uses Kernel mode authentication and the kerberos tickets uses this and not the App. Pool identity. This causes KRB_AP_ERR_MODIFIED errors and the Kernel mode authentication must be switched off (check out this blog by Spence Harbar: http://www.harbar.net/archive/2008/05/18/Using-Kerberos-with-SharePoint-on-Windows-Server-2008.aspx) This article is about troubleshooting the specific error message and is mainly written for the Microsoft Sharepoint configuration. It can give some insight for other scenarios as well. I ran into this error message in multiple Windows Sharepoint Services 3.0 (WSS) and Microsoft Office Sharepoint Server 2007 (MOSS) installations with different solutions to it and you can use hours and days to troubleshoot this error message. Therefore I wrote this article to summarize the problem and possible solutions to the error. Overview of what to configure for the Kerberos Kerberos is the recommended authentication method in Sharepoint and we need to catch our breath and see through the confusing error messages that are popping up on our screen. First of all: It isn't really difficult to configure Kerberos if you know how to do it – and more important: how not to configure it wrong. If you just try to configure it and do not really know how it is supposed to be configured and why then you can get into trouble finding and undoing the bad configuration. We only need the following to be done Get a static IP address for all our servers and make sure the DNS zone (forward & reverse) do not have duplicate entries. Configure delegation trust for the Application Pool account, Frontend- and SQL servers Configure h
