Holding down alt-print screen works fine, to just capture a single window. Is there a permanent solution to this? I'd rather not mess with third-party tools. windows-xp multiple-monitors print-screen share|improve this question edited Sep 1 '09 at 1:36 salmonmoose 1,5501014 asked Jul 20 '09 at 20:05 Jeffrey 2,02031936 You might consider adding the tag "multiple-monitors" to your question. I'd do it myself, but I don't have enough reputation yet. –tnorthcutt Sep 1 '09 at 1:19 Wow I'm having the same problem but I can get it to paste into Photoshop (CS3), like it's not even grabbing the screenshot. However, Alt-Prnt-Scrn works! And I know I don't have memory issues because I've used the print-screen screenshot (pasted into PS) for years on this same machine--- it used to work not more than a week ago. Probably I just need to reboot? Windows being random again. Or is some clever program disabling this out of spite? Grrr. –Jared Updike Oct 5 '09 at 17:48 Not much help I know, but can you reproduce the error in Safe Mode? That might help rule out graphics driver buffering issues (if you can reproduce the problem, if you can't then that's a possibility...) –Redandwhite Dec 2 '09 at 0:07 add a comment| 8 Ans

It then fails with a dialog box that says "unable to get the data from the clipboard"Only a reboot seems to fix the problem. A logout/login is insufficient.I googled, but no one seems to have the answer. It may be keyboard related as copy/paste work fine it just seems to be the "print screen" button is not copying the screen to the paste buffer correctly. It's not pasting nothing because I can empty the paste buffer and then press "print screen" and get the message. It would be nice to cure this issue, rather than fixing it with a reboot.Machine is running XP SP2 fullky up to date and virus free. Ive also tried pasting it into photoshop but it just comes up as a black canvas with the outlines of the close, minimize and maximize buttons. This problem has been happening for ages and its starting to get on my nerves. Anyone know of any solutions?
