Here are the exact steps I followed: Installed Windows 7 on a clean drive - Windows created a 100MB system partition, then I created a 350MB partition for the O/S, and I left 125GB unallocated. Installed Windows XP in a new partition allocated from 125GB unallocated space. After first reboot of Windows XP setup, I get "Error loading operating system". I attempted to fix the problem using the "Startup Repair" tool on the Windows 7 installation DVD, and although it found a "master boot record corruption" and fixed it, I still get the same error after rebooting. windows-7 windows boot share|improve this question asked Oct 15 '09 at 6:50 gdenning 12815 migrated from serverfault.com Jan 6 '10 at 10:13 This question came from our site for system and network administrators. add a comment| 7 Answers 7 active oldest votes up vote 3 down vote accepted Windows 7 would have to be the last OS installed. Windows XP after Windows 7 - Nightmare Solved After spending 3 hours trying to get my PC which was preinstalled with Windows 7 to dual boot with XP, I finally found the http://blog.lexxweb.co.uk/?p=42 solution that worked for me. I tried all of the suggestions that http://www.techspot.com/community/topics/error-loading-operating-system.129383/ were given in the support forums including meddling with my BIOS and none of them worked for me. I even tried using different partitioning software because I was worried the partition wasn't setup properly. - It didn't make a difference. My Solution: I used Windows 7 partition manager to create a error loading new primary partition to house my new Windows XP installation. I set it to FAT32 file system just for simplicity and because I had started to stress out with NTFS at this point. Then I put my windows XP disc in and began the installation process, however the problem came when the computer finished the command line based installation and was ready to move error loading operating into the Graphical Interface section of the install process. When the system rebooted it would halt with a message "Error Loading Operating System". Which was very unhelpful. Restoring Windows 7 to Working Order In order to get back to a reusable Windows 7 Installation you have to replace your Windows XP CD with your windows 7 DVD and reboot from the DVD. After selecting your language, click on the little link in the left hand side of the screen and select the command line from the list of options (after you select the Windows 7 installation you want to repair). In the command line if you run the following commands in order; bootrec /FixBoot bootrec /FixMbr This should allow you to boot back into your original Windows 7 installation. Completing Windows XP Installation Now once you are in windows 7 we have to find a way of getting the bootloader to give us the option to boot into the incomplete installation of Windows XP Service Pack 2. Fortunately a handy freeware application exists which makes this relatively easy. EasyBCD. Screenshot of EasyBCD Install this application and then click the Add

Having this problem for some time I have been able to do a bit of research on the topic. This problem most often will occur when one is trying to install a new OS, the message will appear during the reboot portion of setup. I, however, had been running this system two years with no prior problems. When this was the case, for other people, the HD was often corrupted, damaged, old. After running several scans on my HD, I ruled out this possibility after failing to find the slightest error. Going on the possibility that the Windows installation may be corrupted (Note: I can boot Windows off a floppy disk, made to boot Windows XP) i tried the FixBoot and FixMBR functions on my install disk. No luck. I installed a working version of BartPE on my HD, and I got the same result when I tried to load that instead of Windows, this makes me think that the problem is not with the Windows installation. Just to be on the safe side though, i did a repair installation of Windows, no luck, upon restart I was confronted with the same message. Well, I figured, the problem
