Here are the exact steps I followed: Installed Windows 7 on a clean drive - Windows created a 100MB system partition, then I created a 350MB partition for the O/S, and I left 125GB unallocated. Installed Windows XP in a new partition allocated from 125GB unallocated space. After first reboot of Windows XP setup, I get "Error loading operating system". I attempted to fix the problem using the "Startup Repair" tool on the Windows 7 installation DVD, and although it found a "master boot record corruption" and fixed it, I still get the same error after rebooting. windows-7 windows boot share|improve this question asked Oct 15 '09 at 6:50 gdenning 12815 migrated from serverfault.com Jan 6 '10 at 10:13 This question came from our site for system and network administrators. add a comment| 7 Answers 7 active oldest votes up vote 3 down vote accepted Windows 7 would have

I'm a fairly well experienced Windows user but have been sticking with XP over the years as I was bitten first by the lack of device support for Windows XP64 and then the horrors of Vista. I'm still running XP on my business computers as I do a lot of work in acoustics and audio but I am going to slowly change over to Ubuntu as I can and will probably leave a small windows XP partition for the few things I will have to keep it for. Anyway, I am more than impressed with Ubuntu - on to my problems. I have a system which originally had two drives - XP on an 80gb Maxtor IDE drive with a Samsung 500gb SATA drive for file storage. I started off by using the Ubunbtu download to install alongside windows but it seemed pretty slow (My windows XP install was a few years old, had gotten very slow and also had some spy-ware problems I could not fix) So I then decided to

I want to dual boot XP, so I started to install it and, when it rebooted, got the "Error loading operating system" message, which error loading operating was expected since XP wipes out other MBRs. No biggie, I can just boot to a prompt using the Win7 disc and fix it there, right?Nope. When I try that I get "Press any key to boot from CD" and then a blank screen with nothing but a flashing cursor. ::sigh:: Okay, so let's boot using the USB drive I installed Win7 from.Nope.When I do that I get "Error loading operating system" again. WTF?So, anyone know how I can fix this because right now I have a computer whose only function is BIOS tweaking. RobL777 Ars Tribunus Angusticlavius Tribus: SouthEastern U.S.A. Change the boot order so that BIOS looks in the CD drive first, then goes from there. This should allow the Win 7 repair CD to work, if you quickly "Press any key..." after the POST. You may have to use the Win 7 repair disc several times in a row in order to retrieve your Win 7 install. It is still true that you want to install older Windows operating systems first, then later ones. In order to get around this in your situation, you could use the Easy BCD
