It can't be the hard drives because it happens even with my brand new hard drive. If the drive I'm using boots perfectly and I clone it to another drive, surely they are both exactly the same. So why will the newly cloned drive not boot? But, I don't think that this relates directly to your problem (since a clean install wouldn't suffer from this issue). Advertisement don_1953 Thread Starter Joined: Dec 8, 2006 Messages: 75 I have an old Dell Optiplex GX280, with a single SATA connection capability, no chance to add a second drive. My original hard drive is 40Gig I want to clone it to a 320Gig drive, but can't do it inside the original computer. I thought I'd try bringing my old 40gig and 320 gig http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/146642/error-loading-operating-system/ drives to work, then use a machine with 4 sata connections to hook up my two drive and clone them that way, but after using Max to clone the 40 over the 320, and putting it back in the GX280, I get "Error Loading Operating System" from the 320 drive. I suspect the clone process did not make the 320 drive bootable, is there any way to fix that after the fact? https://forums.techguy.org/threads/solved-cloned-xp-pro-drive-will-not-boot.892214/ I did boot the machine with the 320G drive using a Windows XP installation CD to get the repair module, so I can see the data, but it won't boot. I'm running Windows XP Professional Service pak 3 I'd be grateful for any help don_1953, Jan 8, 2010 #1 Sponsor Elvandil Joined: Aug 1, 2003 Messages: 51,988 How did you clone? What software? Elvandil, Jan 8, 2010 #2 don_1953 Thread Starter Joined: Dec 8, 2006 Messages: 75 I used Maxblast 5 to Clone the old drive, but I wasn't booted to it when I cloned it. I wish the GX280 had 2 SATA connections, if so, this would have been easy. I had to hook both the drive I wanted to clone, and the new drive I was cloning to in a third computer that had multiple Sata connectors on the Motherboard I just tried making a bootable CD using the MaxBLAST 5 Media builder and boot to the GX280 with the bootable CD, but that brings up an error "To use the product, you must have one Seagate or Maxtor Device on your system. (Which I do, but it's just not seeing it.) When I boot using a Windows XP Pro installation CD and go to the repair module, all

I used Partition Master to clone the old hard drive to the new hard drive. When I installed the new hard drive, I get the error message "Error loading operating system" I visited this forum and viewed a few topics, one of which error loading operating suggested using the recovery console from the install CD and executing the fixmbr, fixboot, and bootcfg commands. I've done that and still no joy. The recovery console detected the operating system which I told it to use, entering the administrator password.Dell Latitude D820, Windows XP Professional SP3 Top Maverick Patriarch Member Posts: 1145 Joined: Wed May 05, 2010 9:06 am Re: Cloned hard drive "Error loading operating system" Quote Postby Maverick » Sun Jan 01, 2012 5:11 pm Dear PolyMike,Fixboot, and bootcfg commands are used to fix the boot loader issues. They are not suitable for your case. The first and second boot loaders in MBR and DBR both are fine in your disk. Your machine passed those boot steps. Just the copied system files are corrupted, and gave you the error when the machine was trying to load them. We suggest you use Windows XP installation CD to perform an in-place upgrade for this problem. You can refer to this link.http://support.microsoft.com/kb/978788 Please have a try and tell us the

Darkhadou, Jan 16, 2006 #2 SypherTek Guest in order for a sata drive to boot it needs the sata controller driver to be built into the windows installation. if youve cloned from an ide it may not have this. you could try booting up the pc with the windows disk in, press f6 when the installation is loading (this is to specify additional devices i.e your sata drive) youll need to download your motherboards SATA diskette to load the sata driver so that xp setup can see the hard drive. when youve loaded the sata driver continue with the setup until it asks if you want to repair a windows installation. choose to repair the installation on the sata drive. when you are in the recovery console type FIXMBR and hit enter this will fix the master boot record for the hard drive. when youve done that try to boot from it again (making sure that your ide hd isnt plugged in) if you still have no luck you may just have to install windows onto the drive rather than using the clone SypherTek, Jan 16, 2006 #3 dohati Member Joined: Jan 25, 2005 Messages: 23 Likes Received: 0 Trophy Points: 11 tried your suggestion SypherTek, still not loading. i did a search on how to make a SATA driver boot disk and found that i had to use the cd that came with
