The key to do this can be F1, F2,esc or Del key a second or two after power up. The splash screen should tell you what key to press to enter the bios also. You need to do one or two things. A. Set the boot order of devices, in what we call the boot list. 1. CD/DVD rom drive. 2. New hard drive. You may also have to change the interface used. There will be an option in the bios that sets the modes. Sata or Ahci. If the mode is set to sata change it to Ahci mode. Save the settings before exiting the bios. Insert the windows cd/dvd in the drive. Restart you should get a message press any key to boot. Share keitht44720 17 September 2013 15:41:06 Shaun o said:Yes i do. I want to dual boot XP, so I started to install it and, when it rebooted, got the "Error loading operating system" message, which was expected since XP wipes out other MBRs. No biggie, I can just boot to a prompt using the Win7 disc and fix it there, right?Nope. When I error loading operating try that I get "Press any key to boot from CD" and then a blank screen with nothing but a flashing cursor. ::sigh:: Okay, so let's boot using the USB drive I installed Win7 from.Nope.When I do that I get "Error loading operating system" again. WTF?So, anyone know how I can fix this because right now I have a computer whose only function is BIOS tweaking. RobL777 Ars Tribunus Angusticlavius Tribus: SouthEastern U.S.A. Change the boot order so that BIOS looks in the CD drive first, then goes from there. This should allow the Win 7 repair CD to work, if you quickly "Press any key..." after the POST. You may have to use the Win 7 repair disc several times in a row in order to retrieve your Win 7 install. It is still true that you want to install older Windows operating systems first, then later ones. In order to get around this in your situation, you could use the Easy BCD boot loader app. Put it on the Win 7 install, install Win XP to another partition, or hard drive, then knit the two operating systems together with the Easy BCD boot loader. This make take some study and effort on your part to do successfully. hux "Wonder en is gheen wonder" Ars Legatu
Installing to New HD by John Mueller Error when trying to boot off of Windows 7 USB Installer: Error loading operating system I have been rolling out Windows 7 finally to upgrade all of our Windows XP machines. At first I was going to install it via DVD but our 25 lab computers only have CD drives in them. I then figured out how to make a bootable USB Windows 7 Installer disk and wrote up how you can do it too here. I successfully installed Windows 7 on one of our lab machines using the USB boot drive and ordered 8 USB sticks from Amazon.com to do a mass deployment. You can purchase the same usb drives on amazon.com here. The very next computer I chose to install Windows 7 on happened to have a bad hard drive on it so I dropped in a new drive and then went to boot off the USB disk and got the following error: Error loading operating system I tried every different USB connector on the box and it wouldn't work. I tried the first USB stick I'd created for installing Windows 7 and that didn't work, I tried setting the USB drive as the first disk in the boot order and that didn't work either. I tried the USB disk on another identical computer that already had Windows 7 installed on it and it worked fine there and then it occurred to me: The Windows 7 Installer was looking for a formatted Windows disk to store temporary files on and since the HD was an unformatted drive it was failing. How to Fix: Cannot Boot off Windows 7 USB Installer Drive When Installing to New HD Here is how to get around this error: Step 1: Boot up on Windows XP Install disk. Step 2: Using the Windows XP installer format the HD: Step 3: Install Windows XP from CD. You don't need to joint it to the domain or update it or anything, simply quit out as soon as you can after the installation is successful. Step 4: Boot off the USB Windows 7 Installer Disk. Now that you have a formatted drive it will work fine.
