Error Loading Operating System Windows Xp
on separate partition from Windows 7 up vote 5 down vote favorite I was trying to install Windows XP on a separate partition from my Windows 7 (RC) installation, but after the first reboot of the Windows XP setup, I get "Error loading operating system" and the system halts. Here are the exact steps I followed: Installed Windows 7 on a clean drive - Windows created a 100MB system partition, then I created a 350MB error loading operating system windows xp virtualbox partition for the O/S, and I left 125GB unallocated. Installed Windows XP in a new partition allocated from 125GB unallocated space. After first reboot of Windows XP setup, I get "Error loading operating system". I attempted to fix the problem using the "Startup Repair" tool on the Windows 7 installation DVD, and although it found a "master boot record corruption" and fixed it, I still get the same error after rebooting. windows-7 windows boot share|improve this question asked Oct 15 '09 at 6:50 gdenning 12815 migrated from serverfault.com Jan 6 '10 at 10:13 This question came from our site for system and network administrators. add a comment| 7 Answers 7 active oldest votes up vote 3 down vote accepted Windows 7 would have to be the last OS installed. The XP bootloader may be unable to handle Windows 7, but the other way around is likely fine. Try fixing your mbr (/fixmbr) from a Win 7 recovery console. share|improve this answer answered Oct 15 '09 at 7:39 Xorlev 1764 Thanks Xorlev, you set me on the right path. "Bootrec /fixmbr" at the Win 7 recovery console fixed the problem. –gdenning Oct 15 '09 at 14:38 You can also use BcdEdit which is good tool. –avirk Jun 13 '12 at 15:12 add a comment| Did you find this question i

I'm a fairly well experienced https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1910651 Windows user but have been sticking with XP over the years as I was bitten first by the lack of device support for Windows XP64 and then the horrors of Vista. I'm still running XP on my business computers as I do a lot of work in acoustics and audio but I am going to slowly change over to Ubuntu as I can and will probably leave a small windows XP partition for the few things I will have to keep it for. Anyway, I am more than impressed with Ubuntu - on to my problems. I have a system which originally had two drives - XP on an 80gb Maxtor IDE drive with a Samsung 500gb SATA drive for file storage. I started off by using the Ubunbtu download to install alongside windows but it seemed pretty slow (My windows XP install was a few years old, had gotten very slow and also had some spy-ware problems I could not fix) So I then decided to try installing Ubuntu on a spare Western Digital 500gb IDE drive I had. After doing this I realized I would have been better using the SATA drive with the extra transfer speed this should give it. So I have ended up with the windows XP partition still on the 80gb Maxtor drive (dev/sdb), the Ubuntu operating system on the 500gb Samsung drive (dev/sdc) with the 500gb WD drive as a spare (sda) I had it all working nicely apart fr

New system with Vista preinstalled. Shrank disk, partitioned, installed XP, restart: "Error loading operating system". Any workable suggestions other than reinstall Vista? g Reports: · error loading Posted 7 years ago Top Fernguy Posts: 251 This post has been reported. I am assuming you have a laptop. So you will need to slipstream the SATA drivers.Try googling "How To Slipstream SATA Drivers Into XP CD" their many tutorials available on the web. Reports: · Posted 7 years ago Top crist2000 Posts: error loading operating 1 This post has been reported. well I gave the same result. But I figured out how to resolve. 1. first, you have to restore Vista. Use bootrec commands (/fixmbr, /fixboot) using Vista restore console. 2. make changes to BCD configuration using Vista Boot utils or manaully by bcdedit commands 3. Copy 3 XP boot files (boot.ini, NTDETECT, ntldr) from Vista root (C:) to partition where XP resides. If you perform correctly all this steps after restart you will see boot menu where you can choose OS. If you choose XP, XP setup resumes. I want to dual boot XP, so I started to install it and, when it rebooted, got the "Error loading operating system" message, which was expected since XP wipes out other MBRs. No biggie, I can just boot to a prompt using the Win7 disc and fix it there, right?Nope. When I try that I get "Press any key to boot from CD" and then a blank screen with nothing but a flashing cursor. ::sigh:: Okay, so let's boot using the USB drive I installed Win7 from.Nope.When I do that I get "Error loading operating system" again. WTF?So, anyone know how I can fix this because right now I have a computer whose only function is BIOS tweaking. RobL777 Ars Tribunus Angusticlavius Tribus: SouthEastern U.S.A. Registered: Sep 22, 2008Posts: 9074 Posted: Mon Sep 26, 2011 6:14 pm BIOS tweaking may be just what the doctor ordered, at least partly. Change the boot order so that BIOS looks in the CD drive first, then goes from there. This should allow the Win 7 repair CD to work, if you quickly "Press any key..." after the POST. You may have to use the Win 7 repair disc several times in a row in order to retrieve your Win 7 install. It is still true that you want to install older Windo
