workstation vm (200G) to an ESX vm. Finished 100% with no error. However, when I power it on my ESX suse error loading operating system host, it says "error loading operation system". The Guest OS is Ubuntu Linux (32-bit). 1vCPU, 1024MB Memory. It was a vm originally on a workstation. Anything I am missing? Re: Help! error loading operating system IamTHEvilONE Jul 30, 2008 9:38 AM (in response to eagleh) how did you do the conversion?Converter won't configure the VM that you are using because it doesn't recognize linux operating systems. Also, ESX only supports SCSI hard drives and Workstation will typically use IDE.take a look at this: http://communities.vmware.com/docs/DOC-5751 Like Show 0 Likes (0) Actions 2. Re: Help! error loading operating system eagleh Jul 30, 2008 9:49 AM (in response to IamTHEvilONE) Thanks. So from the link you gave, they are doing, firstly, P2V (while in my case is V2V); secondly, they are using SCSI (I assume as you suggested). So, in my case, Linux + V2V + SCSI, no way to be able to put on ESX? Like Show 0 Likes (0) Actions 3. Re: Help! error loading operating system IamTHEvilONE Jul 30, 2008 11:44 AM (in response to eagleh) P2V or V2V doesn't make much of a difference. The deal is that you are going from one set of hardware to another, and the Linux OS doesn't know what the changes were. It's like you ripped an IDE hard drive out of a physical host, copied the data from the IDE Drive to a SCSI Drive, then plugged the SCSI drive into a new physical host. What needs to be done in the end, is configuring the Linux OS to recognize the new hardware (physical or virtual). And each Linux OS is a little different. This means that hda is going be sda for sake of where the HDD is mounted

0 How to…, Management, Troubleshooting broken, chkdsk, error loading operating system, mbr, restore, testdisk, vmware After a restore a virtual machine failed to start, the screen remained black and the following error was displayed: "Error loading operating system" http://www.running-system.com/error-loading-operating-system/ All standard solutions like "chkdsk /r", "chkdsk /p", fixmbr, fixboot,… did not work. After some deeper research I noticed that there may be a problem with the disk geometry of the virtual disk. I guess that this occured when we aligned a lot of virtual machines some times ago or something happend during the restore. Fortunately I found a tool that helped to clean up the mess and made the virtual machine bootable. error loading Solution: Attach the broken boot disk (vmdk) to another virtual machine download the tool "Testdisk" unzip the tool and start testdisk_win.exe on the virtual machine you use for repair Select "No Log": Select the disk you want to repair: Select "Intel/PC partition": Now select "MBR Code - Write TestDisk MBR code to first sector": confirm "Write a new copy of MBR code to first sector" with y (yes) confirm "Write a new copy error loading operating of MBR code, confirm" with y (yes) Select OK after the new copy of MBR code has been written successfully. Now select "Advanced - Filesystem Utils": In the next window select "Boot": If there are mismatches or problems you will get a view like this: to solve this, select "Rebuild BS" when the rebuild was successfull, leave the tool using "quit" till all windows are closed unattach the virtual disk from the virtual machine power on your broken Virtual machine - it should now boot without any problems!
