Read Error" Hi all, I recently had to reinstall Windows on my machine, which obviously took over the MBR. So I booted to a live-disk (on a USB key), then ran boot-repair to re-install Grub on all of the MBRs. This part went fine, but now I am having a very interesting issue--if I do not have the live USB key inserted into the computer, I get the following error when Grub is loading (i.e. before it shows the menu of OSes to select from): Code: Loading operating system... Read error This only happens when the USB key is not inserted. Here are the things I have tried thus far to resolve this: Boot into Ubuntu, eject the USB key, then re-run boot-repairBoot into Ubuntu, run sudo grub-install /dev/sdX for each of my discs, then run sudo update-grubChange the boot order in my bios to see if setting one of the non-windows drives to boot first would help None of this

I am trying to install it on my new 64gb SSD, it has nothing on it. looked through some of the previous forums but most of theirs have been because they have already got windows already installed on it. Could someone please help? 12.10 usb ssd share|improve this question asked Jan 30 '13 at 11:26 user127259 11114 What tool did you use to make the USB key, that didn't warn you about the NTFS filesystem? –Gabriel Sep 22 '13 at 19:04 add a comment| 1 Answer 1 active oldest votes up vote 0 down vote First you have to make you USB bootable with UNetbootin and then in your BIOS set boot priority to boot first from your USB. Then it should work fine. After you install Ubuntu, remove your USB and pc should boot into the Ubuntu installed on your drive. share|improve this answer answered Jan 30 '13 at 11:35 tikend 5472520 Universal USB Installer can also be used to make bootable ubuntu usb, which is a tool prescribed in Ubuntu website. –TheKojuE

Hey all. My old PC was going slow recently, so I decided to format it completely (using KillDisk) and load Linux Mint on it. Before I did this, I set the boot priority to CD (I have a CD and a DVD drive), and error loading operating I put the KillDisk CD inside and successfully formatted it. However now, when I restart the computer(without the CD) it just says "error loading operating system". I have a mint DVD and USB but I can't change the boot priority (I can't get into the BIOS). But I can still load from the killdisk CD. So anyone know how to fix this? And worst case scenario, anyone know some Mint package <700Mb? Or any other small, user friendly distro? Step away from the PC. Originally Posted by Baxteen I believe Thor is on this forum to make me look clever. and that really does take some doing...
