80 Gig WD Caviar drive. This system previously was running Linux. I deleted the linux partitions during install (with the Win2k CD) and created a new 10 gig partition to Install the Win error loading operating system windows vista 2k O/S. I formatted in NTFS and watched as necessary 2K files were copied during the first phase of the install process. However, when the "first reboot" happened I got an "Error Loading Operating system" message. I wouldn't think this is related to BIOS/disk size or ATA66 vs ATA100 limitations because Linux worked fine. Anyone have any recommendations ? You'll want to boot the Windows 2000 setup disks or CD-Rom. The set of four install disks can be created from your Windows 2000 CD-Rom; change to the \bootdisk directory on the CD-Rom and execute makeboot.exe (from dos) or makebt32.exe (from 32 bit) and follow the prompts. Then *F6* very early and very important (at setup is inspecting your system) in the setup to prevent drive controller detection, and select S to specify additional drivers. Then later you'll be prompted to insert the manufacturer supplied Windows 2000 driver for your ultra ATA controller in drive "A" If you wait and then S to specify additional drivers, then it may be too late as Windows 2000 Setup at this point may have already assigned the resources your drive's controller is wanting to use. When you get to the point, delete the existing NTFS and or other partitions found. After you delete the partition(s) abort the install, then again restart the pc booting the CD-Rom or setup disks to avoid unexpected drive letter assignments with your new install. Be sure to apply these to your new install before connecting to any network. http://download.micros
Core Operating System Division. Error loading operating system message when booting Windows Vista ★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★ John Howard -MSFTDecember 27, 200610 0 0 0 I was faced this morning with a few dilemmas… First, several inches of snow. Now, just for the

record, my idea of fun is absolutely not driving in snow wherever possible having totalled a error loading operating system windows xp virtualbox car many years ago in black ice. No problem, I'll work from home on my work laptop. So I popped upstairs to get the

laptop out of it's case having been stored away for the last few days over Christmas. Hello… the bag seems a little light. Aargh. Yes, I left it in the office. No worries - I'll install another partition on my http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/227803-46-getting-error-loading-operating-system-win2k-server main home machine, VPN back to work and set it up to join the Microsoft corp domain. (Although you can VPN from a machine joined to my home domain, IPSec gets a little upset at some things, so having a seperate partition domain joined is a lot simpler). My home machine is running Windows Vista. I figured I really didn't need Vista for work stuff as basically everything I was likely to do from home is connecting to remote machines https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/jhoward/2006/12/27/error-loading-operating-system-message-when-booting-windows-vista/ in my office or browsing the Intranet. So… I went with XP for the work partition. There comes my first mistake. Of course, knowing that the boot loader setup is very different between Vista and XP, and you should consult the knowledgebase to learn how to re-install the Vista boot loader. KB 919529 has the information - Windows Vista no longer starts after you install an earlier version of the Windows operating system. Easy, so I thought. Nothing can possibly go wrong. So the XP install was now prompting me to reboot, but the setup itself wouldn't restart following the first reboot - I can't recall the specific error but am fairly certain it's the same one I had problems with all the way through - namely "Error loading operating system". Oh well, never mind, I'd had a change of plan and decided to go with Vista afterall. Pop the Vista DVD in, boot of DVD and go into the recovery steps to run bootsect.exe /nt60 c: to restore the Vista boot loader on my original installation before starting the dual boot install. Unfortunately, after running bootsect and rebooting, I still got the same error. Same after running all the recovery options short of running a full system restore (which…. you guessed, I haven't done yet). From another machine and a bit of surfing, it looks like several other people have had the problem. The bad bit though

Having this problem for some time I have been able to do a bit of research on the topic. This problem most often will error loading operating occur when one is trying to install a new OS, the message will appear during the reboot portion of setup. I, however, had been running this system two years with no prior problems. When this was the case, for other people, the HD was often corrupted, damaged, old. After running several scans on my HD, I ruled out this possibility after failing to find the slightest error. Going on the possibility that the Windows installation may be corrupted (Note: I can boot Windows off a floppy disk, made to boot Windows XP) i tried the FixBoot and FixMBR functions on my install disk. No luck. I installed a working version of BartPE on my HD, and I got the same result when I tried to load that instead of Windows, this makes me think that the problem is not with the Windows installation. Just to be on the safe side though, i did a repair installation of Windows, no luck, upon restart I was confronted with the same message. Well, I figured, the problem must be with the BIOS. So I flashed it (t
