Have a CD that does a set up process, but can't figure out how to do the recovery console since I don't want to format a partition with set up.SOLUTION FOUND. Forward to 2:00 in the video and press R. If given the option press 1 and enter. For whatever reason I wasn't given that option, but was taken to the C prompt and typed fixmbr. You get a Caution, just type Y. It takes a second to do. Then type exit and do the steps above again to take you to the set up page. Type R and then 1 and enter if given the option. Then type bootfix and Y after the warning. Then type exit and on the bootup do not hit anything and it should reboot on its own to windows XP. It worked for me.Hope this video helps others. When I try to boot from the Windows 2000 disk it comes up with the same error I read before "error loading operating system". That's weird because I am booting from the CD rom drive at this point. DoubleHelix, Apr 6, 2009 #4 Bossard Thread Starter Joined: Jan 3, 2009 Messages: 128 I took the hard drive out and put it in another computer with the same specs and get the message "error loading operating system" when I try to boot into Windows. That tells me the problem is with the hard drive and not the BIOS. I know the test computer has a good BIOS. It doesn't indicate however why I get "error loading operating system" when I try to boot from the Windows CD rom. Bossard, Apr 7, 2009 #5 DoubleHelix Banned Joined: Dec 9, 2004 Messages: 24,388 What I mean is that are you positive you changed the boot order in the BIOS? Did you set the CD drive to boot before the hard driv

Having this problem for some time I have been able to do a bit of research on the topic. This problem most often error loading operating will occur when one is trying to install a new OS, the message will appear during the reboot portion of setup. I, however, had been running this system two years with no prior problems. When this was the case, for other people, the HD was often corrupted, damaged, old. After running several scans on my HD, I ruled out this possibility after failing to find the slightest error. Going on the possibility that the Windows installation may be corrupted (Note: I can boot Windows off a floppy disk, made to boot Windows XP) i tried the FixBoot and FixMBR functions on my install disk. No luck. I installed a working version of BartPE on my HD, and I got the same result when I tried to load that instead of Windows, this makes me think that the problem is not with the Windows installation. Just to be on the safe side though, i did a repair installation of Windows, no luck, upon restart I was confronted with the same message. Well, I figured, the problem must be with the BIOS. So I
number of common problems associated with booting Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 systems and offers tips on how to resolve them. Troubleshooting is merely the methodical application of common sense and technical knowledge to the inevitable problems that crop up in a fallen world. If common sense can be codified (and perhaps it can with AI) then it starts with answers to simple questions like: Why? How? What? In this article I'll try to distill the issues, tools and procedures of troubleshooting Windows XP/2003 boot problems into a small amount of easily digestible information that you as a system administrator can write on the back of a note card or store in your PDA for easy access when the proverbial poop hits the fan. Let's begin with the Why question. Why do startup problems happen? Windows may fail to start for a variety of reasons, and generally speaking in order of decreasing likelihood here they are: Hardware failure Bad driver Corrupt file or volume System misconfiguration Virus infection Let me elaborate. A common reason systems fail to start is because some element of the system's hardware has failed. This could range from the simple (someone kicked the power cord out of its socket) to the obvious (smoke emitting from the machine) to the mysterious (something transient that happens only when the moon is full or during sunspot minimum). Next most common is when you update the driver for some piece of hardware (or the BIOS for that matter) and the system won't boot afterwards. After that comes those mysterious messages we'll talk about shortly that usually indicate some key operating system file has somehow become corrupt or gone missing. Misconfiguration is another possible source of boot problems, but this is somewhat rare as in most cases you'll still be able to boot but one or more services may fail to start or your applications may not function as expected. Finally, virus infection can cause a system to fail to boot, but I've listed this in last place because I'm assuming you've got an
