However, there are times when you'll need to address such issues in a manual way like, for example, when your computer won't boot. In these cases, you can use a tool named Bootrec.exe. It can help you troubleshoot and repair things like the master boot record (MBR), the boot sector or the Boot Configuration Data (BCD) store. Here's how it works: Bootrec.exe - The Ultimate Repair Tool For Boot Problems No matter whether you use Windows 7 or Windows 8.1, if your operating system has trouble booting and Startup Repair can't fix the problem, it's worth trying the Bootrec.exe tool. In order to be able to use this tool, you'll have to use Command Prompt. However, because you already have startup issues, it's obvious that you won't be able to simply run it from Windows. If you're on Windows 7, first boot from your Windows 7 Setup DVD or a System Repair Disc. Then launch Command Prompt. You'll find more information about the whole procedure here: An Overview of System Recovery Options for Windows 7. In case you're using Windows 8 or Windows 8.1, follow the steps described in the third, fourth or fifth section of this tutorial: 5 Ways to Boot into Safe Mode in Windows 8 & Windows 8.1. Depending on the method you choose to boot your system, you'll be able to launch Command Prompt either from the Advanced options or from the Safe Mode interface. Once you've launched Command Prompt, type the command bootrec.exe and hit Enter to see the options that are available for this tool. As you can see in the screenshot below, there are four parameters available: /FixMbr, /FixBoot, /ScanOs and /RebuildBcd. Later in this article we'll see how each of them can help you solve boot problems. Keep in mind though, that even i

Today I thought it would be cool to dual boot with XP. I put in my xp disc and was going to make a new partition. For some reason, I wasn't able to make a new partition. Then I tried to boot back into Vista. I got a "error loading operating system" message. I did some searching and found that the problem is xp wrote http://www.digitalcitizen.life/command-prompt-fix-issues-your-boot-records over the vista boot record. The only solution I have found is to reinstall Vista, which I really don't want to do. Is there another solution other than reinstalling Vista? I already tried the repair start up from the Vista DVD and that didn't work. Make your computer http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/237114-44-error-loading-operating-system dual-boot Vista and XP By Scott Dunn It's getting harder to buy a new computer with Windows XP installed and — after Microsoft stops selling XP on June 30, 2008 — it will become nearly impossible. Fortunately, you can have your XP cake and eat your Vista, too, by setting up your system to boot between the two operating systems. Add an XP option to your new Vista system If a new computer arrived in your recent past, or you plan to buy one in the near future, chances are it will come with Windows Vista installed. Although some manufacturers still give you the option of getting XP on your new system, that option is likely to dry up for most consumers later this year when Microsoft stops selling Windows XP. If you're not ready to dive into Vista all at once, there is an answer: set up your Vista computer to dual-boot between Vista and XP. In this article, I'll tell you how to make your PC give you a choice between Vista and XP every time you start up. In a separate article coming soon, I'll give you some additional tips that save disk space on a dual-boot system. Although some sources, such as Computer Shopper Magazine, advise that you need an add-on product like VistaBootPro to dual-boot, you can accomplish the same thing without any additional software

So for about 2 days I was receiving 'I/O device errors' and couldn't find what was causing the errors, I performed a chkdsk which took a full day to get to about 80% then the laptop died on me, it switched off and that was that. After rebooting the machine I was presented with 'Error Loading Operating System' and the machine just sits there doing nothing. I tried booting to the hidden recovery partition however the function buttons don't appear to work properly and the only thing I can get into is the Bios. I booted into the Bios, changed the arrangement to boot from optical disk, created a Win7 recovery disk on my home pc and rebooted with the disk in the drive. Booted to disk, it runs, 'loading files' appears and then I'm left on a blank screen with a large white cursor, waited about 6hrs but still no change. I discovered that if I reboot a few times I get a 'failed to read disk, press ctrl + alt + del to restart' error. Tried booting from an external device with a recovery disk on the device, doesn't even recognise it. Any idea's? If possible I would like to keep all the data on the disk, if not then as long as I can trigger the Hidden recovery partition I'm happy.
