I inserted my Windows 98 SE installation disk in the laptop and turned it on. It shows the HP splash screen and an option for ROM based setup by pressing F10. After the splash screen goes away, I get the message 'Error loading operating system' I've been looking for a fix for this for a while but haven't had much luck. Can anyone help? Too much RAM (98 won't run on more than 512MB), processor too fast (98 chokes much faster than 1GHz), you won't find drivers. Just a couple of corrections: You cannot install Win98 ona system with more than 512MB of RAM, but once installed you can limit the amount it sees and you can then install more if you are dual booting. You cannot boot Win98 on a CPU faster than 2GHz. Now, to reinforce the last part: Drivers will be impossible to find. The OP will end up using a generic VGA video mode, they will have no sound, and they will have no wired network, let alone wireless! m 0 l ex_bubblehead 7

What happens is, I can get past the BIOS screen, but after that, I see "Error loading operating system". I've really been unable to fix it... Startup repair says there's nothing wrong, System Restore doesn't work (it says that there are no restore points), and I've tried to use Bootrec to fix the BCD, but it was telling me that there were no Windows installations available. I've done all I can think of to try to fix it, except for reinstalling Windows or replacing the hard drive completely. Is there any way I can get around this problem? And please supply more details. Such as why are you being asked to insert the disk, what is the specific problem with your computer ? The reason no one helped you is that this is in the wrong forum and there is not much info supplied. And if you are being promted to insert a Windows CD error loading os , I would suggest you find one. Take Care. Once you have it, press Alt+F and then X to exit. At the c:> prompt enter each command: ren c:\windows\system\iemigrat.dll iemigrat.old c:\windows\options\cabs\setup The first command keeps Windows from trying to preserve newer IE/Explorer Shell files during the reinstall. You will need to re-update IE if the install completes successfully. The second should begin setup if you have that directory. Follow the prompts and have that Product Key handy.
