If not then there are probably some drivers that you need to install for the notebook. There is a Knowledge Base article that describes one cause of this error message with Windows 95: Err Msg: Error Loading GDI.EXE. IT'S NOT WORKING! PLEASE HELP ME! error loading user Reply With Quote June 16th, 2001,08:56 AM #2 mkral View Profile View Forum Posts Virtual Med Student Join Date Jun 2001 Posts 2 I type it in and it pauses, then shows Cabinet win98_28.cab overwrite C:windows\system\ddeml.dll (I choose yes) extracting C:windows\system\ddeml.dll E: Then I shutdown, and start up without the startup disk, and I get the exact same error. I've got win98 second edition. (This is actually our church's laptop, and we were going to enter a slide show for this Sunday Morning!!) What I do suspect is that it may be caused by faulty ram. You can download and install DocMemory to a clean floppy (using the system you are on). Then boot with it in the bad laptop. Let it run for a couple of complete "loops" before pressing esc to terminate. http://www.simmtester.com/PAGE/products/doc/docinfo.asp One other possibility, did this problem begin after attempting to restore user.exe using the System File Checker?? ------------------ What the Dormouse said [This message

I got a message that user.exe is corrupted and that I should restore it. I tried to restore it from the W98 disk but it could not find it. I made sure it was looking in the right location. Then I thought if I went to dos and deleted user.exe and then copied it from my system to the windows\system directory the it would boot, it did not. I tried to do scanreg \restore and that did not work. Any way to correct this without reinstalling windows.
