I've done a little reading about linux but other than that i'm a total newb. This is a new computer that was just built and i'm pretty sure theres a problem with my partitions or my MBR. After this try of installing FC4, it seemed like everything went well, and then after the restart it says "error loading OS". This hard disk has never has an OS error loading operating on it before though it used to have some files on it from my old windows system, but i'm pretty sure that those files are gone now. So i'd like to start over and low level format and if necessary repartition my drive and install fedora again, but the diskdruid program that the fedora installer uses doesn't seem like its actually formatting my hard drive. OF course I could be totally mistaken about whats causing this error. Can anybody tell me what to do to get fedora running on my machine? oh yeah and i can boot into kanotix(live distro like knoppix) so i'm pretty sure most of my hardware is set up ok. I'm gonna list the system specs below: Asetek Vapochill XEII case, Freon based CPU cooler, and chill control board Athlon 64 3500+ CPU Abit Fatal1ty AN8 motherboard OCZ 1GB DDR 500 pc 4000 RAM with thermaltake active memory cooling kit. Realtek 7.1 audio card Nvidia GeForce 6800 Ultra 512MB PCIE Video card BenQ DVD burner with lightscribe(set as IDE1 Cable select/Master) Maxtor 250GB IDE Hard drive(set as IDE1 Cable select/slave) Antec 500W PSU I know alot of distros don't like 64bit CPUs, PCIe cards, or me so this might be an issue but i can get Kanotix to run so i dunno. Thanks in advance for any help/advice. If you need more information about my system just ask I tried to be fairly detailed given that i'm not actually loo
resolution. After I guessed that I wanted to use Grub (for whatever that is) it completed the installation. I rebooted my computer and now I have a screen that says 'Error loading operating system'. I am a totally clueless internet surfer on a windows98 machine. I was using WindowsXP which I had installed on two separate drives. I was going to wipe one of those installations out, but now it won't let me boot into either installation so now I have reverted to as far back as 98! Linux seems like way more trouble than it's worth. If anyone wants my computer details they are 650 Mhz and 128Mb ram, 13 inch monitor (I beleive - well it's freakin' small that's for sure). You probably picked the wrong distribution of Linux for you to install to start out with, unless you are a computer hobbieist and like to try different things. DSL is not difficult, but you need to be willing to forget everything you know about Windows and start from scratch. There are other distributions that have more automated installations. Your best bet with DSL, if you have no other Linux experience, is to first learn to use the live CD. You can do a lot with just the live CD, and some place to back up your settings, like a Windows 98 hard drive.Better start with an easier distro like Fedora or Mandrake Rpm based linux distro's. If you dont want to spend time downloading an other distro.. then this is the problem: You wanted to install DSL to hdd but you problably didnt set any linux partitions. How to do that isnt that hard. Just boot again with your dsl cd then open your terminal/shell as root and give this commando: cfdisk. Thats the place were you can make/delete and adjust partitions. you must make one partition by selecting new, then you must set the partition type by selecting Type. the number you need to fil in is 83 (linux partition) and for the end you select Write to set the setting in your partition table. Now you can instal dsl to your hard disk.By the way
