Having this problem for some time I have been able to do a bit of research on the topic. This problem most often will occur when one is trying to install a new OS, the message http://www.techspot.com/community/topics/error-loading-operating-system.129383/ will appear during the reboot portion of setup. I, however, had been running this system two years with no prior problems. When this was the case, for other people, the HD was often corrupted, damaged, old. After running several scans on my HD, I ruled out this possibility after failing to find the slightest error. Going on the possibility that the Windows installation may be corrupted (Note: I can boot Windows off a floppy disk, made to boot Windows XP) i tried the FixBoot and FixMBR functions on my install disk. No luck. I installed a working version of BartPE on my HD, and I got the same result when I tried to load that instead of Windows, this makes me think that the problem is not with the Windows installation. Just to be on the safe side though, i did a repair installation of Windows, no luck, upon restart I was confronted with the same message. Well, I figured, the problem must be with the BIOS. So I flashed it (the equivalent, in this case, of replacing the current BIOS with an updated version). Well, the new version came with a nice menu f

It's an old IBM-Thinkpad. It was given to me for free. Lately when I go to start it a black screen comes up and it says "Error loading operating system" it then tells me to push any key to reboot and when I do so the same message coems up again. i know nothing about computers. Is the stuff on my computer totally gone? or is it a direct sign that things need to be backed up and fast because i have a failing hardrive??? Any help would be great. Like i said im taking it in tomorrow and dont even want to touch the thing for fear of making it worse. You may however, need to pay to have the data recovered. If the drive isn't toast it could be put in another system and you can easily copy the data then. The other possibility is that one of the core system files for the OS has become corrupted and you can no longer load the OS. That would simply require reinstalling the OS. In general it would be better to reformat the hard drive and start clean, but you can just reinstall it so you can get back in and save your data before reformatting. 12-23-2010, 01:12 AM harhar Location: Whittier 2,830 posts, read 3,780,630 times Reputation: 2379 Sounds like a bad boot sector. IF you're taking it in and you know absolutely nothing about computers then that's probably the best thing to do...although read on... I'd want to know how old it is; the model or type. Why do you need the stuff on the hard drive, if at all? If I had the computer in front of me I'd try to reset the CMOS; usually there's a reset button under older laptops that you need to push in with a pin. But I'm guessing NJGOAT is right and that most likely you'd want to get a new hard drive and new OS. With parts and labor it could be anywhere from $100-$300+++ dependi
