to reinstall Windows on my machine, which obviously took over the MBR. So I booted to a live-disk (on a USB key), then ran boot-repair to re-install Grub on all of the MBRs. This part went fine, but now I am having a very interesting issue--if I do not have the live USB key inserted into the computer, I get the following error when Grub is loading (i.e. before it shows the menu of OSes to select from): Code: Loading operating system... Read error This only happens when the USB key is not inserted. Here are the things I have tried thus far to resolve this: Boot into Ubuntu, eject the USB key, then re-run boot-repairBoot into Ubuntu, run sudo grub-install /dev/sdX for each of my discs, then run sudo update-grubChange the boot order in my bios to see if setting one of the non-windows drives to boot first would help None of this has resolved the issue. I was posting for help originally in the boot-repair thread (link below), but this seems to be a bit bigger than just boot-repair, so I'm bringing it out to the wider audience. Boot-repair thread: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.p...769482&page=11 Info on my discs and partitions: http://paste.ubuntu.com/789290/ Any help is much appreciated! I want to dual boot XP, so I started to install it and, when it rebooted, got the "Error loading operating system" message, which was expected since XP wipes out other MBRs. No biggie, I can just boot to a prompt using the Win7 disc and fix it there, right?Nope. When http://arstechnica.com/civis/viewtopic.php?p=22100830 I try that I get "Press any key to boot from CD" and then a blank screen with nothing but a flashing cursor. ::sigh:: Okay, so let's boot using the USB drive I installed Win7 from.Nope.When I do that I get "Error loading operating system" again. WTF?So, anyone know how I can fix this because right now I have a computer whose only function is BIOS tweaking. RobL777 Ars Tribunus Angusticlavius Tribus: SouthEastern U.S.A. Registered: Sep 22, 2008Posts: 9074 Posted: Mon Sep 26, 2011 6:14 pm BIOS tweaking may be just what the doctor ordered, at least partly. Change the boot order so that BIOS looks in the CD drive first, then goes from there. This should allow the Win 7 repair CD to work, if you quickly "Press any key..." after the POST. You may have to use the Win 7 repair disc several times in a row in order to retrieve your Win 7 install. It is still true that you want to install older Windows operating systems first, then later ones. In order to get around this in your situation, you could use the Easy BCD boot loader app. Put it on the Win 7 install, install Win XP to another partition, or hard drive, then knit the two operating systems together with the Easy BCD boot loader. This make take some study and effort on your part to do successfully. hux "Wonder en is gheen wonder"

Solved Getting "Error Loading Operating System" Message After Migrating Partitions to New Hard Drive Posted on 2010-09-19 SBS PCs Hardware 1 Verified Solution 20 Comments 1,030 Views Last Modified: 2012-08-13 I have a client w/ a Windows Server 2003 SBS running on a Dell Server. The SATA HDD had 4 partitions on it (the Dell FAT16 partition plus 3 NTFS partitions) and space was running low so I brought the HDD home with me and used Clonezilla to copy all 4 partitions over to a brand new 500 Gig HDD. The partitions seemed to have copied over fine but when I put the new HDD into my test system and tried to boot it, I got an "Error loading operating system" message. I suppose that the Master Boot Record may have not copied over properly or is otherwise corrupted. Should I run the FIXMBR command on this drive? Or what is the proper way to fix this? Thanks in advance. 0 Question by:anuneznyc Facebook Twitter LinkedIn Google LVL 46 Active today Best Solution bydlethe Got your email, here is your response .... Also, leave all partitions the same size as on the original. 0 Message Active today Author Comment by:anuneznyc2010-09-19 Thanks rindi. How can I verify if the partition is Active. And if it's not, what command do I run to make it so? I can't leave the partitions the same size
