I have a 500GB HDD with these partitions Screenshot.png I'm currently using the live CD to boot because when I try to boot to this HDD it simply comes up with the error "Error loading operating system". It was working fine until I started reformatting a different drive with XP on it; since then it has had the error. As far as I know I need to reconfigure GRUB to boot to the correct partition, but I do not know how to do this. I know that there are already threads about booting/GRUB problems. I have looked at a lot of them but because no one has exactly the same problem

Could someone please help? 12.10 usb ssd share|improve this question asked Jan 30 '13 at 11:26 user127259 11114 What tool did you use to make the USB key, that didn't warn you about the NTFS filesystem? –Gabriel Sep 22 '13 at 19:04 add a comment| 1 Answer 1 active oldest votes up vote 0 down vote First you have to make you USB bootable with UNetbootin and then in your BIOS set boot priority to boot first from your USB. Then it should work fine. After you install Ubuntu, remove your USB and pc should boot into the Ubuntu installed on your drive. share|improve this answer answered Jan 30 '13 at 11:35 tikend 5472520 Universal USB Installer can also be used to make bootable ubuntu usb, which is a tool prescribed in Ubuntu website. –TheKojuEffect Jan 30 '13 at 11:59 1 did you set up bios correctly? –tikend Jan 30 '13 at 13:02 8 My housemate suggested I try it in FAT32 format instead of NTFS and it worked right away –user127259 Jan 30 '13 at 18:01 2 of course. i forget to tell you this. usb will not boot from ntfs, only from fat32. –tikend Jan 31 '13 a
I have tried doing a repair. Apparently the install partition is not getting labeled as Root. In Expert Tools when I try "Boot Installed Systems", it reports "No Linux root partition found". I have tried the automatic repair and everything. Another error reported by the repair tools is "Loading failed for kernel modules". It tries to repair "missing initrd modules" but fails to repair it. It's unable to repair bootloader because of "error in partitioning". I didn't do anything custom in the install settings so don't know how it gets all these errors. The entire installation process looks like it goes flawlessly. It just can't boot once it's done. Have tried install a few times. I've installed linux distro's before but never had this happen. Intel Atom N450, 1 gig ram, HD is plenty big enough, using 64bit ISO Thanks tks111120-Apr-2014, 02:20In case this has something to do with my external USB DVD drive, what is the proper way to make an installation USB stick from Suse ISO? malcolmlewis20-Apr-2014, 02:51Hi UEFI or MBR setup? While openSUSE centric, I use imagewriter whithout problems. http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Live_USB_stick tks111120-Apr-2014, 03:25Hi thanks for help on USB issue. I just got done doing test install of Windows Vista on same computer from the same external DVD drive. Worked perfectly and Vista booted from HD without problems. So I think that eliminates any issue of the external DVD drive as a culprit. So I no longer see it as worth while to try installing Suse from USB stick. So I still need some insight as to why Suse will not boot up after install even if the installation process appears to proceed perfectly without errors. The various errors and problems only come up when I attempt the fix tools from the DVD. So again I refer reader to original msg at start of this thread. This is still a mystery. Thanks for any insight. malcolmlewis20-Apr-2014, 03:37Hi It didn't install into the mbr of the usb device, rather than the hdd? If you leave the usb device connected did it boot? What is your hardware setup? tks111120-Apr-2014, 03:53Hi, I was not installing onto USB. I was installing onto HDD from external DVD drive that connects via USB. Again, a test install of WinVista worked fine and booted, but not Suse. Suse appears to install fine but then does not boot. It appears that the boot partition is not being set as "boot" by Suse setup or something. The system is an Asus laptop, Intel Atom N450, 1 gig ram Cheers malcolmlewis20-Apr-2014, 04:41Hi Yes I understand your installing onto the internal hdd, my s
