Error Message Error Loading Operating System Cause Each virtual machine has VMDK descriptor file(s) in virtual disk(s), and there is a parameter "ddb.geometry.sectors" in a VMDK descriptor file. ESX always sets the parameter as a fixed value when creating the virtual machine. For instance, the parameter is set as 63 when a virtual disk is larger than 2GB. For details, please refer to the VMware KB 1026266 in below Solution section. Similarly, the parameter is set as the fixed value even if restoring a virtual machine where the parameter is set as the customized value (e.g. ddb.geometry.sectors = "53"). In this case, the parameter is different from the original one, and the restored virtual machine fails to be started with an error "Error Loading Operating System". Also the same issue can occur when P2V is performed. Solution Please edit VMDK descriptor file(s) to set a parameter "ddb.geometry.sectors", "ddb.geometry.headers" and "ddb.geometry.clinders" as the original values when this issue occurred. A

After reading that VirtualBox can directly work with vmdk files, I created new virtual error loading operating machine, connected image and launched it… Then I was surprised by: Error loading operating system. I thought: “What nonsense.” I turned off VirtualBox and turned on VMware, but again same mistake... I spent several hours before finding solution to this problem. All actions were performed under VMware. I loaded to CD VMware image of Windows 7 Ultimate (Windows 2008 Server will do the job as well) and set boot from it. After launch and selecting language I selected recovery mode. Then I selected command line launch and typed the following commands: > bootsect /nt52 ALL /force /mbr> bootsect /nt60 ALL /force /mbr Having done that, restart and get a working system. Moving from VMWare to VirtualBox was done more safely using VMware import/export wizard.
