Message Accessing or viewing a shapefile in ArcMap or ArcCatalog returns the error:"Error opening feature classNumber of shapes does not match the number of table records" Cause There
Error Opening Feature Class General Function Failure
is a mismatch between the number of features and the number of records in the DBF file.This can be caused by editing the shapefile DBF table in Microsoft Excel.This can also be caused by an ArcMap crash while the shapefile is being edited. Solution or Workaround The options listed below may fix the problem.Warning:Please be aware error opening feature class unable to create object class extension com component that third-party scripts and extensions are unsupported by Esri. It is highly recommended that a backup copy of the shapefile be created before running the damaged shapefile through either of these utilities.Use the 'ShapeFile Repairer' utility available on ArcScripts to fix the mismatch. The following methods may corrupt the feature class name and table:1. Selecting the name and modifying it.2. Solution or Workaround For ArcGIS 8.x, use the following solution:If the data is not a geodatabase feature class, export it to a geodatabase. I then downloaded version 10.3 ArcGIS Desktop Advanced. Now when I error opening feature open the mxd, all of the data links are broken. when I open properties to reset the data source, I get an error: "***Error opening Feature Class". I get the same error on a blank map and adding a shapefile. I tried to preview the same shapefiles in arcCatalog - I get the same error plus an additional that says "number of shapes does not match number of table records" Any ideas? My final strategy will be to uninstall 10.3 and go back to the earlier version. There are some shapefiles that will open in ArcMap, but not very many. I haven't figured out a pattern yet. I can open ALL of the shapefiles fine in QGIS. I've never had 10.1 on this device - I had to move my license over. I am on a Surface Pro with Windows 8.1 and 64 bit. I did initially download Pro - and then realized my license didn't cover that, so then downloaded Desktop 10.3. Perhaps something in Pro is interfering? Still, some data works and some does not.
