First I tried to install clear library. I've copied the file from the /bin folder and copied the dependencies to the chroot. However, when I entered the clear command, it says: TERM environment variable not set. So, when I'm logged in as root, the value of TERM is xterm-256color. But when I enter export http://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/83833/term-variable-in-chroot TERM=xterm-256color, it says unknown terminal type. What should I do? debian environment-variables chroot share|improve this question edited Apr 27 at 16:04 Anthon 47.4k1462125 asked Jul 21 '13 at 13:27 Devos50 13116 1 What exact commands did you use to enter the chroot and run clear? –Gilles Jul 21 '13 at 21:15 add a comment| 3 Answers 3 active oldest votes up vote 2 down vote clear depends on terminfo. terminfo uses the value of $TERM as a key to look up the proper escape sequences for your terminal in its database. You need to copy the terminfo database files for the terminal types you want to be supported in the chroot. You'll find them in /lib/terminfo or /usr/share/terminfo. If the files aren't found, terminfo can't do anything but tell you that it doesn't recognize your terminal type. share|improve this answer answered Jul 21 '13 at 20:15 Wumpus Q. Also, debian has a very useful tool for populating chroots with a debian system, look at the man page for debbootstrap for more. share|improve this answer answered Jul 21 '13 at 14:07 jeremiah 1905 add a comment| up vote 0 down vote A good suggestion from the Gentoo alt-install doc: Instead of chroot /your/chroot/path /bin/bash run chroot /your/chroot/path /bin/env -i TERM=$TERM /bin/bash env -i w

If I run xterm and run htop out of it, it works. htop isn't the only app that is complaining about the terminal right now though Example::: Starting full system upgrade... resolving dependencies... looking for inter-conflicts... I want to install the driver for my lexmark x2650 on a 32 bit chroot (i have a 64 bit system.) However, whenever I do so i get the message: Code: Verifying archive integrity... All good. Uncompressing nixstaller............................................................... Collecting info for this system... Operating system: linux CPU Arch: x86 Error opening terminal: xterm. I've looked around and it seems that this is because the chroot cannot open an x server. I have not found any clear instructions to fix this so I must beg your help. Thanks in advance Adv Reply October 4th, 2011 #2 searchfgold6789 View Profile View Forum Posts Private Message Cake for coffee's sake Join Date Oct 2009 Location New Hamsha Beans 1,275 DistroKubuntu 13.04 Raring Ringtail Re: need help with lexmark printer in chroot It's not that it can't open an X server. It can't open up it's own terminal session. I would do a few things: Make sure that you're running the installer as rootMake sure the files are executable, do a Code: sudo chmod a+x {filename} Try putting 'sh' in front of the filename next time you run it. has worked for me before with this sort of thing.
