running DCPROMO to make my machine active directory/domain controller the computer hangs at "Applying Network Settings" on bootup for exactly 210 seconds and then boots into Windows. The only error in Event Viewer is: ------------------------- Event Type: Error Event Source: NTDS General Event Category: Internal Processing Event ID: 1168 Date: 2/13/2009 Time: 1:14:31 PM User: NT AUTHORITY\ANONYMOUS LOGON Computer: CONCORD2003 Description: Internal error: An Active Directory error has occurred. Additional Data Error value (decimal): 1053 Error value (hex): 41d Internal ID: 3000502 -------------------- I've went into DS safe mode and ran the semantic checker: go fix thing and it didn't report any errors. I'm really stumped. I was at this point a few days ago and installed Exchange 2003 and it tanked the whole system. Wouldn't shutdown after installing Exchange (left it shutting down overnight). When I powered it back up it locked at "applying computer settings" (I left it there for a few hours). I've axed and re-loaded it and am getting this error again after running DCPROMO and I would rather not try installing Exchange again untill I get this resolved. I'm running Windows Server 2003 Standard R2 with SP2 with all of the windows updates done. I am VERY new to DNS, AD, DC, etc., and followed this walkthrough on how to set up DNS prior to running DCPROMO: http://www.petri.co.il/install_and_configure_windows_2003_dns_server.htm nslookup works dcdiag finds no problems other then complaining that the "dns caching" service is stopped, but I can not find this service in services.msc to start it. This is a very simple network. I was running a workgroup setup on FAT32, but purchased Exchange 2003 (for calender sharing) so have to go to ntfs/active directory/dc now. The server is connected to a router. I have assigned the server a static IP of 192.168.2.44 and default gateway of 192.168.2.1 (router) and put 192.168.2.44 for the DNS. Under advanced I have addedd my ISP's DNS server underneath my 192.168.2.44 address. To get the DNS server service working I had to enter my domain name under System Properties, Computer Name, Change, More, Primary DNS Suffix. Prior to this DCPROMO was saying DNS error with some RCOD
